Who ever decided to resurrect Plex for Panasonic Smart TV, thankyou from the bottom of my heart.
A bit of lag navigating but once video plays it’ ok, I haven’t fully tested it yet but better than nothing.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the Plex app in my HZ1000. However when I tried playing local contents, I get this error “Playback Error. An unexpected playback problem occurred.”

Any fix to this problem?

Have you tried playing any other video formats?

I found out the cause of this problem after checking the app Plex->Settings->About which shows app name as “Plex for Smart TVs” which according to Plex support article (link below) has limited playback capabilities.

Support for video are as follows:

  • Bit Rate: 4Mbps max
  • Resolution: 1080p max
  • Bit Depth: 8
  • Codec: H.264
  • Container: mp4, mpegts, mov
  • Audio: AAC, 2 channels

Must try and play some H.265 and see what happens

The video will be transcoded to H264, and EAC3 audio transcoded to AAC.

I am really glad to see Plex giving it support to Panasonic again. I am using HZ1000 oled model. I don’t mind Plex app to transode my 4k HDR (HEVC) content to 1080P and all TrueHD and DTS-HD MA7.1 to 2 channel. But, one thing I am not happy is that the transcode will be triggered by PGS subtitle and making the jerky playback. It is absolutely important for all those people which English is not their native language to watch the movie. Can Plex fix this issue?

I can remember now why I decided to get a Apple TV 4 to use with my Panasonic TV is that the majority of my files don’t play only the old school AVI’s and MP4’s files do.

Somethings I would like to add is that my PMS support HW transcode and HW tone mapping. Thus, anythings transoding back to 1080P is possible in other players (Apple TV, Iphone12, Samsung S22 and Chromecast with Google TV and PC). Like I said before. I am fine with transoceded 1080P playback. However, once the PGS subtitle is selected, it will make the playback “stop and start” repeatedly. I believe it is the Panasonic plex player (5.43.1) issue.

Here is the my PMS details for reference.

  • Intel 11th Gen Tiger Lake :1165G7
  • Ubuntu Desktop 20.04.4 LTS
  • Intel Compute Runtime v21.49.21786
  • Plex Media Server v1.27.2.5929

Transcode issue is the main problem… The app now work well except that all movies are always transcoded.
