I thought the OS would run android apps? Does that not work yet?
Well, it does … sort of …
Sailfish runs Android apps within Alien Dalvik, so it is like a virtual machine running the Android apps.
For high performance Android apps this is not working well, if at all.
nikhau: what’s an high-performance app for you? Why dont you say it right away. Gaming is for some games a pain if at all playable
Virtual is always slower than when you runs something native. And Just for the record. If you compare those two mobile OS, Sailfish is much more advanced. It even runs on my N900 from Nokia. But thats my opinion

To me high performane apps are anything that utilize lot of cpu and lot of memory, eg gaming or player for high quality video streams.
Yes, gaming is always a pain - regardless of platform …
Yes, Sailfish itself is very advanced, however this is not true for the Jolla phone, it was mediocre already at launch, and with today standards it is more like a low spec phone.
And as you said, virtual is slower. And it does not help when the virtual layer is missing some features compared to the native Android OS, and is also corresponding to Android vesion 4.1 which is quite old.
As you might be aware, Sailfish introduced a memory handling function, which kills Android apps automatically if the memory usage gets too high. Even too some extent that everyday usage of less memory intense apps get difficult to use. Hopefully they have sorted this out for Sailfish v2 that is due any week.
So all in all, using the Jolla phone for Plex using the Android app is not very useful.
However, a true native Sailfish version of Plex, that really can take advantage of the full power of the OS is something else … and very much wanted.
I just wanted to start this topic when I just realised a request for a Sailfish app exists already. First I must say the experience with this OS so far is phenomenal. The system really is advanced, and with the upcoming partnerships in hardware production (phones) Jolla can concentrate on what they can do best- polish the OS.
So next year an increase of the userbase to me would be plausible.
Of course the app store doesn’t accept paid apps currently. But releasing an app for Plex Pass users only could be a temporary workaround (I know those apps don’t pay for themself). Sooner or later paid apps support is a logical step/necessary thing.
sorry for not being often back here. I was in a very bad shape the last half year and just recovering (health, financial situation because of job loss and more). I still want to look into program that app myself and think I will start soon with it, but as stated im no programmer
I really are a fan of Jolla and Sailfish and happy to read what you wrote wmb. And also agree with you. Would a poll be useful? Do we have polls in plex forum?
@nikhau : thx for the explanation and yes your totally right. The hardware was medicore but with the OS still powerful. Thats what I loved so much. Did you know that Saiflish is also be running on the puzzlephone. Also a phone I will be buying as soon as I have some money left. Originally I wanted the special edition but because of job loss and not much left on the bank I could not afford it.
