I have been a Plex pass member for YEARS… I love Plex and I recommend it to a ton of people but in the past year + the media play for Android TV has been getting worse and worse. The biggest issues I have:
— It crashes and freezes
— Libraries will not load. If I switch from recommended to Library it will sit and spin for a minute and give me blank screen. I have to leave and comeback to the library screen multiple times for it load.
— The UI is SO outdated… This wouldn’t bother me so much if it wasn’t for the above issues…
I have tried cleaning bundles, optimizing my database, with no results. I don’t know what to recommend, but I don’t understand why the UI is so SLOW and remains so slow. It’s not like I have an old player I have a brand-new Google TV Streamer. Do I need a better streamer?? I feel like that won’t make a difference. My server is on my local network, there are no v-lans between my player and my server. There are no bottle necks on my wifi and wired network, s please tell me why the Android play is such junk…
BTW my brother-in-law uses my server on Apple tv and has no issues at all. Not to mention he is accessing my server remotely.
Yes. The Google tv boxes are fine for direct playing low quality videos like you get from Netflix and Google tv, but it’s not really up to the task for highs quality files or when transcoding is involved.
The apple tv is a more powerful device comparatively. Although, the ui should not be painfully slow on the Google tv. There maybe some other factors going on.
Google TV is getting an update from android 12 to android 14 to improve performance. You can also set it to app mode only which speeds things up and uses less memory.
“ The official removed the Chinese language in the recent update, which offended me. I really don’t know what the official was thinking, maybe their brain is in the prostate” for anyone looking for the translation
Have you cleared the cache on the Android TV app? Optimizing the database is a good server-side step, but The Android TV version of Plex seems to be poor about clearing old data from cache. I’ve found the Plex app cache to be over a gigabyte at times (which is ridiculous when so many smart TVs have only 8 GB of storage to start with even before their own firmware and non-removable apps eat into it).
Plex has really poor support for Apple devices. It’s sad since they’re the most capable devices on the market but Plex devs seem to hate us Apple users.
I believe this is one of the reasons for the switch to the new app. The app now shares the same code base with android so support should increase for both. It’s just going to take some time for the app to catch up on features.
Has something changed? It was my understanding the “normal” AppleTV app is the legacy app still. To get the New Experience interface (and the new playback engine that is supposed to address the stuttering on high-bitrate 4K content), you would need the TestFlight version.
