Plex handling of chapter markers when the file already has them?

So for the longest ive barebones’d my media. The video, and 1 audio track - thats it. No subs, no chapter markers - I mean, plex handled all that so why clutter things up/complicate things etc.

Well, my mindset is now changing a bit, and although unlikely - if i ever wanted to use my media outside plex, i’d be SoL.

Now im not going to work my way back and fix thousands of files (even though trust me, my OCD is preeeeetty compelling) going forward, I’m probably going to start making a more “complete” movie archive.

This leads me to my question - how does plex handle chapter data if its already embedded in the mkv?

can plex see that and just skips generating chapter markers for said title? (while we’re here, i assume the same cant be said for subtitles, youd just get an extra subtitle you can select from right?)

If the chapters are in the file, Plex will use them.
If they are not there, it will try to find the movie in its copy of the chapterdb website.
If it cannot be found there, the movie won’t have chapters in Plex.

If you later acquire a copy of the movie with embedded chapter markers, I’m afraid you’ll have to perform the Plex Dance in order to get those chapter markers recognised by Plex.

fortunately, best i can tell/convince myself at the moment - it will only be for movies going forward.

thank you for clarifying!
