In admin mode (account XXX) I can see the download option on items in my libraries.
I shared my libraries with a friend (account YYY) allowing the download option.
If I understood well for him to have the possibility to download files from my librairies, I needed to have a Plex Pass so I ordered one for 1 month for the account XXX. But the download option did not appear for him.
I saw : Downloads FAQ | Plex Support and supposed that him also need a Flax Pass. So account YYY subscribed also to a Plex Pass for 1 months but no download option appears neither … So I do not understand… We have subscribed only for this download option …

For the two accounts, I can see that the pass is activated (in “my account”) … And just to be sure for this download option to work, the two accounts required a Plex pass or only one (XXX or YYY) ?
After the change to Downloads recently, supposedly only the CLIENT needs the pass to download. This means that the server owner can’t even download the files that they themselves control, but friends with the pass (your YYY account) can (assuming you gave permissions to their account to be able to download).
To summary: My plex server is installed on my nas. Version installed: 1.28.0.5999

That looks like the web app in the browser. that option Download File is only for the server admin. and is not the same as the Download option which is what the Plex Pass is for.
“Download” option is only avalable in the Desktop and Mobile apps NOT the web browser app.

As I saw the download option there (screenshots in my previous post) in the server admin (XXX acount), I supposed it would also be present in the same place for the YYY account …

A server admin can always use the Download File option in the web app only. This is a direct download of file to the computer. Much like if you right clicked on an image in a web browser and chose “save file as”
Anyone who wants to use the Downloads option in one of the supported apps needs a Plex Pass. The difference is that Downloads the supported apps knows the file is downloaded to the device and can still track playback

“download” which is only supported in the apps listed in article are sent to the app and the app can play and can do thigngs like send playback progress back to the server. download new episodes when old ones are watched.
“Download file...” which you can only do from your own server you are admin of and only from the web app, is not the same thing. it is a direct download to the computer like when you right click on an image from the web and choose “save files as”. it removes any association with server and is just a file on your computer
Yes. Downloads requires a nano server as part of the app which manages the downloads ( keeps track of watch status , etc while offline) which the web browser app has never had.

I understood the that the download option only works with the app and that only the Client User Account who wants to download needs a Plex Pass subscription.
I have a Server Owner Account (created the 18th April 22) with a plex pass which has expired yesterday.
The Client User Account (created the 15th August 22) which want to have the option to download has a lifetime pass.
Yesterday the ability to download in the windows plex app for the client user account vanished and I do not understand why as all the requirements listed on https://support.plex.tv/articles/downloads-on-desktop/ are met (and server Owner Account is not required to have a plex pass if I read correctly)…

That’s almost the exact same thing you originally asked. Are you sure they are using Plex for Windows? Please have them provide a screenshot of the entire page with the button missing.

Not the same, in the beginning I did not use the windows app (it was the the web app in the browser…). I understood after the explanation of @BigWheel and the windows app (Plex for Windows) have been used since with no problem to download. But since the plex pass of the Server Owner Account has expired last Sunday the option vanished at the same time for the Client User Account which used to download although it has a lifetime pass. i think it is possible the Mac/Win/linux desktop app was not updated to the new behavior but I am checking with team. Unfortunately the person i think would know for sure is currently unavailable

I created a Client User Account for which I subscribed to a plex pass lifetime to gave it to my family specifically so they can have the download option … Please let me know what could be the problem because apparently, in my case, the Server Owner Account should also have a Plex pass although it is not what is mentioned in different places on your website. And I don’t want to have to pay a second life time pass …
