I just worry that if they do that (allow external player swaps), that they’ll be fielding even more questions and support than they do now. People will say, well, i pay for the product, support me in me not getting my video working properly using madvr/mpc-hc/insert external sw here. I’m not usually a fan of closed systems, but when i want a product that just works and works efficiently, I’m fine with leaning towards closed (not that plex doesn’t have its problems of course).
In contrast to Kodi, where yeah, they may support more things, but also where you have no expectation of things working or that you’ll get any help. If you get help on your problem, lucky for you, but you don’t expect it.
@moochweiser i do think the htpc crowd is dwindling. at the very least i see two camps being the most outspoken (“just buy a shield” or “use madvr”) everybody else in between is quieter ( probably because their product is just working from them not fiddling about ). Heck, i’m on a lowly 1080p tv with 2.1 desktop speakers and a fire stick; and i’m still a /r/htpc mod. not exactly the htpc poster boy anymore.
Agree, i just miss-understood the product when it was shared, my mistake. but now that i know it is the Dev’s decision on road path, i don’t have any concerns as i understand the product now. I would still recommend to rename it to plex “something”, as plex “htpc” doesn’t really match , in my opinion.
I would love to use plex in the home theater, so the wife would be more happy that the UI is the same as the rest of the house, but for myself, unless i switch to Envy or something new from CES 2022, I have no issues with my current UI, as i only spend a 10-30 seconds navigating to the Bluray or UHD Bluray i want to watch, and then it is all on the media player for playback.
I’m in a group of 19 users running Plex HTPC (most of them are using it because of me). We are a diverse bunch brought together by sport.
Whilst I can not speak for every user of Plex HTPC, all of those 19 are happy with Plex HTPC as it is.
I would like AMD support but my setup runs perfectly well as is. The UI is awesome. IT JUST WORKS.
None of our 19 user group are getting these issues mentioned such as stuttering etc. A couple have had issues with remote play, but since resolved with updates. I think a couple of people are going back to Kodi next year as they are tinkerers. I’ve been there (long time XBMC user). No thanks, not now that Plex HTPC has matured and become stable and slick to use… I’ll put DVR aside as we no longer use it. Just didn’t work well for us. Suspect it is my failing
I’m by no means a videophile. In fact, our HTPC is more PC than HT. The ten foot control is very important to us for the times we use the HT side.
I think the Plex team provide fantastic support and indeed customer focus.
Do they get everything right, no. However, the number of updates and issue resolution is better than most.
Anyway, I feel sorry for those that feel hard done by or aren’t getting what they think they should for their PlexPass sub. If that were me, I’d probably move on.
I am new to Plex and found the Win10 desktop version limited compared to Kodi, but on trying Plex HTPC I love it, still getting the feel of the system but so far it works great I will give more feedback when I have given it some more use.
On certain files where subs were working prior to 1.9 they no longer work and i see this error in my logs.
INFO [SubtitleConnectionManager] Subtitle connection ignored. App is not rendering subtitles.
the same files will play properly with subs with plexweb, plex for samsung and plex for android, however PLEX HTPC won’t render them
Why is there no sync mode option like PMP? It’s the only way I can get consistent frame rate match. I use auto switch with sync mode video. In HTPC I can use auto switch but depending on when it starts it may stutter a lot and I have to keep restarting the movie until it is in sync. But then I cannot pause or it will most likely start out of sync once I resume playback.
Say, does anyone have a magic mpv.conf setting to boost hdr brightness? Since I run my htpc to an Epson 5040ub I don’t get the best hdr performance; it tends to lean to the dark side. Can I specify some kinda nits value or gamma? I’m looking for something that I don’t have to fiddle with, between hdr and sdr.

Not sure tho how many of these will work as long as “libmpv vo” is used by plex. You will unfortunately have to fiddle around.
I’ll give it a go! Now that I think of it, though, I wonder if it’d matter. I have tone mapping turned on on the server side, but as far as I know plex htpc is doing direct play…

Late to the party but with the past few weeks of using Plex HTPC daily, I can safely say it’s perfect for my needs and has officially replaced Kodi. Extremely happy with where the software is at considering it hasn’t even been officially released as far as I know.
I have not experienced any of the issues others have mentioned (stutters, etc) but my setup and use may be much more vanilla than most.
I have no feedback in terms of the functionality as everything I’ve tinkered with works as intended. My feedback is more in terms of very minor tweaks/quality of life changes I would make (if I were tinkering with the software in the same way I tinkered with Kodi).
When the “Clock” is disabled, the screensaver’s lower third gradient is unnecessary - it should be removed in this scenario.
I have not found a way to quickly return to what might be considered “now playing” when it comes to music. If I have an album playing (in the background) and am exploring other areas with the app, retuning to the playing album view is somewhat clunky (navigating to the top right). There is a convenient shortcut to return to “Home” from anywhere in the app - it would be ideal for a similar shortcut to return to the music “Now Playing” view.
There does not seem to be any music playback controls outside of the music playback view. This logic makes sense for video playback but not for music. The shortcuts that work for next in queue will only work in the music album view. If I am anywhere else in the app and a song comes on I wish to skip, I have to navigate my way back to what’s playing before I have control again. This would be less of an issue if the second point was addressed.
I think that’s it as of now. Other changes/tweaks I would make (primarily concerning subtitles) would only be nitpicking at this stage.
Still having this problem with HTPC player. I can play these multiple files on iOS and Roku clients just fine but HTPC player is having a problem playing the 2nd file of these multi-disc rips.
Having used J River and being disappointed by PMP, it is great to see another attempt here at Plex!
Some feedback:
1 - Audio outputs
The non movie audio output is not controlled in settings, it is the device default. It would be great if the app sounds could be controlled as well
2 - Quick Info
There are 2 info/debug screens, can they both get shortcuts and buttons. At the moment it seems the debug screen is via shortcut and the other via playback options.
Better whilst this is in BETA to have quick buttons on the main playback panel
3 - Backdrops
Rotating backdrops for fanart. Now this is being built for powerusers, can we have some common requests that might not transfer well to other players
4 - Default monitor.
For multiple screen support, it would be good to choose which screen to be fullscreen on
