Plex HTPC feedback

Thanks for the massive effort!

Looking very slick already… :sunglasses:

I ran the Mac version on macOS 11.6.5 Big Sur on a system with 64GB of RAM, 8-core 2.4 GHz Intel i9 and AMD Radeon 5500M with 8GB. I would have thought that’s enough to run PlexHTPC smoothly, but alas!

  1. It was very slow in loading and reacting to user input.
  2. It had massive frame-rate and resolution problems.
  3. It displayed the text in the menus the opposite of crisp and clear - it was washed out and difficult to read.
  4. The cast and crew in the movie/show info pages don’t link to other movies/shows they are in that I know are in my library.
  5. I miss the option to change the layout and background of the movie/show info page. It would be top if you made this the same as in the consoles and TV Plex Big Screen App.
  6. I love the slick Plex intro animation when the app starts up… but it needs refinement.

After tinkering with the settings a bit, I gave up and am now waiting for the next version, which hopefully fixes some of these issues. I guess 'tis but humble beginnings… but it’s great to see a concrete vision of what this can be down the road after further development. It truly looks amazing already… I love Big Screen Apps, and missed it on the Mac.

Rock on! :metal:

@anon5074910 - Something to try: once you have it positioned where you want, make sure to exit using the “exit menu” in the app (pressing esc until it asks you if you want to exit) rather than pressing the X button on the window border or Alt-F4. That should ensure the window position preference is stored (it did for me anyway). If not, make sure your config file (%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Plex HTPC folder on Windows) is writable (it would be strange if it isn’t though…).

Thanks. Have tried both exit from the menu and using the big kill app X but both result in the same, app always starts on monitor #1.

Checked my /home/xxxx/snap/plex-htpc/common/plex.ini config file and it contains everything I would expect to see and it has the correct permissions etc… Think this issue is specific to linux.

Hi,
I’ve had some intermittent issues with audio playback in Plex HTPC for quite some time now and I finally decided to ask for some assistance. I’m on Plex HTPC for Windows version 1.15.1.

Just to clarify, audio playback usually works fine in Plex HTPC, but sometimes there seems to be a lockup and suddenly when starting a new movie or show, there is no audio. Today I was watching some short HD Audio samples. The 2 first samples played fine but when I played the third sample, audio suddenly stopped.
Audio never quits during the actual playback, these audio issues often happen between episodes or movies or if I start a movie/show after the computer has been on for a couple of days.

Restarting Plex HTPC does not help. The only solution seems to be restarting the computer. After a fresh restart, everything plays fine like nothing happened until audio locks up again after a couple of days.
I find it this really strange and wonder if any of you have similar audio issues?

I have attached some logs that perhaps could shed some light:
-audio was working fine when I started playback on May 7th at 13:09
-audio not okay when I started another playback a couple of minutes later same day

I am unable to play remux in Plex HTPC. The player keeps showing the loading sign but the video never loads. Whats odd is that the same file plays perfectly in Plex Media Player:

" Plex Media Player (for Windows Home Theater PCs)
Windows 7 SP1 or later (64-bit only).

Details about the file I am trying to play:

It’s hard to tell from your description but are log entries such as this

May 07, 2022 13:09:23.330 [6476] DEBUG - [MPVEngine/mpv] ao/wasapi: OnDeviceStateChanged triggered: sending hotplug event
May 07, 2022 13:09:23.330 [6476] DEBUG - [MPVEngine/mpv] ao/wasapi: OnDefaultDeviceChanged triggered: sending hotplug event

corresponding to when you turn on and off the AVR? Some of them are very close to when you stop a playback.

If so, likely the issue is not sufficient delay after a refresh rate change. I noticed that you don’t have any delay set and you should experiment with increasing it. This can cause intermittent audio playback issues with some AVRs if no delay is set or it is too small.

No one can begin to help without application logs.

Thanks @gbooker02 for your reply.

I do not turn on/turn off my AVR. Perhaps the logs are showing that the AVR is switching state depending on audio type (for example switching from Dolby Atmos to DTS-X, etc).

And you are right, I do not have any delay at all for the refresh rate change. I will definitely try increasing the delay to see if any improvements.

Note that 1.16.0 has been released which has several fixes that have been bugging people here:

NEW:

  • (Windows) Allow switching to HDR for HDR content

FIXED:

  • Fixed the episodes screen list containing only the played episode after playback
  • Live TV: Fix title truncation on DVR schedule view and add channel details to recording text
  • Audio device would get stuck on auto
  • (Windows) Corrected VRAM leak in MPV
  • (Windows) Playback would rarely open in a separate window

Note: On the audio device selection, we changed it to remember which audio devices you select in order from most recently selected to least. It only remembers ones you explicitly set in the UI and looks for them in that order. You will likely need to set your preferred audio device once for it to remember it across devices being connected/disconnected.

I had stopped using Plex HTPC due to an issue with a black screen refresh on opening and closing Plex HTPC when running fullscreen (suspect due to a screen res mismatch). The Plex intro logo also got messed up. I’ve tried various solutions with no luck as yet. Borderless windowed would solve the issue.

Tried the new version and same issue but the fixes work great.

I was just updated to v1.16.0 on Plex HTPC for windows 10 ( I’m running win 10 pro) with a Samsung 4k tv via HDMI 2.0

For some reason this version in full screen mode the app zooms the picture 1000% so I had to change it to Maximize instead but now I get the taskbar above with the Plex HTPC logo.

I’ve tried changing the win 10 dpi to 100% (I had it set to 200%) but that didn’t help.

Update: I downloaded new Nvidia display drivers for K620 and that fixed the issue.

If I turn off UHD for the HDMI input on my Samsung TV, the issue with Plex HTPC is fixed. Entry Plex logo works fine, no black screen on entry or exit.

Not ideal.

So if I want to play n HDR video on my Windows 10 HDR monitor, I …? Flip my monitor to HDR, start the video in Plex, and … ?

Hmm, he new version is actually freezing. Never seen this before.

Edit: restarted app, started an HDR file in Direct Play on a Windows 10 monitor in HDR mode, and it looks like pants… Low contrast and saturation. Turning on transcoding to do tone mapping when the display is set to SDR looks correct. So how do I take advantage of HDR?

Hello,

Thank you for this update and new HDR switch feature.

I have noticed that while it does now switch to HDR, refresh rate switching doesn’t work when the HDR switch is on. It works when HDR switch is off, however.

Not sure if this is by design or a bug.

I have attached a log to assist.

Thank you!

This release sounds really awesome!

Can you share some insights on how this was acheaved? Is it using the newly added libplacebo patch?

Will this fix make it into the regular mpv over on github as well? (I have not seen a PR over there)

The logs are indicating that it is switching to 23.976Hz display modes each time. What indications do you have that this isn’t the case?
Ugh, gotta love Windows APIs. If you change the resolution/refresh rate via the APIs, then toggle HDR, it flips back to the previous resolution/refresh rate. But if HDR is flipped first and then resolution/refresh rate is switched, then it works. Maybe is MS had documented the API that they put in their headers for developers to use the docs would’ve mentioned this.

Turns out there is a public but undocumented Windows API to do it.

I informed the developers of it a few weeks ago but I get the impression that they don’t really care since it doesn’t occur in their standalone player. Only when wid is set can it occur.

Thanks for the response and info. I noticed it because I check my TV (LG-C1) info panel and it said it was at 60fps on 23.976fps movies.

So I gather that this can be fixed based on your response?

Yes, though you’ll have to wait until the next version.
