Is there a way to have resolution switching enacted only for 4K video files?
I have the dekstop set at 1920 x 1080 and want it switched to 4K for 4K video playback, but left as it is for lower resolution files. If it switches those the video scales off of the screen, and goes very odd. When that happens I have to back out, go into the settings and turn off resolution switching. Then turn it back on for 4K files.
That is actually an issue I also experience. I noticed that with DVD rips, Plex HTPC tries to (correctly) switch to such a low resolution but windows/linux mangles the output… I already asked if it would be possible to leave the resolution untouched on those lower-resolution files. (720p and lower). I guess it has fallen into oblivion.
The only way I can make refresh rate switching work is to set desktop as 1920 x 1080. Also means I can run 120 HZ if required. Separate item to resolution switching but bear with me as the two are linked for me.
I’m happy for the display to upscale to UHD (not ideal but with our viewing distance and our eyes, UHD is a bit of a non event). The display also appears to handle lower resolution media as well.
If I enable resolution switching. I get the same issues you do (also happens if my desktop is set to UHD however). Windows and/or Plex messes up the display.
I’ve decided to live with HD for all content as manually changing each time is just tedious. Also means that I don’t need resolution switching TBH,
The HTPC runs a 2700X with an RX580X, Win 11 Pro 22H2. Through a Denon AVR to a Samsung NU8000.
Thanks - that’s good info. It looks like the behaviour is the same across different hardware and OS’s. I will stop trying to fix my PC to resolve the issue, and hope that Plex fix it their end.
