Plex inconsistent director/movie list association results

In my personal Plex library (Plex Media Server running in LAN on Windows 10) I have weird results when searching by Director.

For instance, when typing in the search bar, “pasoli”, Plex will correctly show:

r/PleX - Plex inconsistent director/movie list association results|750xauto

However results will not include the complete list of movie’s by this director within my personal library. Only one movie will be listed. Notice that Plex will show a sort of filter list on top of the movie poster “Actor, Movies, By Title”. Is this the expected behaviour?

r/PleX - Plex inconsistent director/movie list association results|750xauto

Now, selecting the above movie and entering movie details, one can select again the director, right below the movie title (“Directed by…”):

r/PleX - Plex inconsistent director/movie list association results|750xauto

This will shift view to another form, containing director’s details along with unexpected multiple results (correct list of movies by director within my personal library) rather than unique movie listed in the initial search , which is a puzzling behaviour!

As a sidenote, within the results, “Le Notti di Cabiria”, although being directed by Federico Fellini, it is correctly listed, since Pasolini was a co-screenwriter, however there are no visible tags for that movie referring to Pasolini.

Can someone explain whats going on?

Maybe this:
Edit your movie library in Plex,
go to the Advanced tab
and verify that “Allow matching to explicit content” is NOT activated.

Setting is not enabled. Could it be that the database is corrupted?

This is the current expected behavior.

Can you refresh the metadata for this title? After adding this title to a library I’m seeing “Le Notti di Cabiria”/“Nights of Cabiria” in the Movies & Shows in Media Libraries hub for Pier Paolo Pasolini.

Have you added those movies which are missing from the director’s page, assigned to a specific {edition}?

This is the current expected behavior.

This behavior is inconsistent.

If I search for ‘Pasolini’ as a text string, Plex shows only one movie. However, if I select ‘Pasolini’ as a director/tag from within a movie’s details, it shows eight. Essentially, the number of results changes depending on how you navigate to the search.

As per “Le notti di Cabiria”, I have refreshed metadata, and there’s no tag for Pasolini, although he was a co-screenwriter. How does Plex know this?

Partially.

Some movies are part of “Criterion” collection

I meant edition, not collection. https://support.plex.tv/articles/multiple-editions/

No multiple editions

I can write a python script to debug, using Plex API if required. What should I look for?

Can you share a screenshot of this?

The second screenshot in my first post

 sorry. Using your first image you can see that this person has at least 2 roles (Actor, Director).

If you select the {Server Name +X} link you’ll be presented with a source picker for where each role in each library they exist in. Selecting their name or the result will result in showing the results from the first role listed, in this case Actor. If you would like to see all the films that they were the Director for you’d need to select the {Server Name +X} then the role and location.

If you’d prefer to land on the person’s Discover Credit page instead of the role/source picker like the below image, you would need to enable More Ways to Watch Search Results. This can be enabled in your settings here or in the search settings (if it’s not disabled in your settings page).

Search Settings:

PMS does not have tags for Screen Writer as you’ve shown in your related screenshot. However, our hosted media provider does have this information which is where the Discover Credits are pulling from.

Finally, this makes sense!

Thanks for taking your time explaining :+1:
