I am having an issue with Plex. I have my Windows 11 PC hooked directly up to my TV, and I use Plex to manage my media libraries. I use the Plex MPV Shim to play all HDR content and Plex Media Player to play all non-HDR content within Windows. This is because HDR content has worked best for me with the former, but non-HDR content ends up being too dark with it, so I use the latter for that instead. However, I use Plex on my iPhone XS as a remote for playing media on my TV through the PC, by means of the casting feature. I simply find what I want to play, and then I select either the Plex MPV Shim or Plex Media Player to cast to from my phone, and it effectively serves as a remote telling either of those applications to play that specific file from my PC, locally stored.
However, I’ve been having this strange issue where the cast is lost, namely whenever I pause something and then go to another app on my phone to check something. While I’m playing something, I might decide I want to check my email on my phone for a minute, so I’ll pause whatever I’m playing on Plex from my phone, which is “casting,” which in fact means it’s simply controlling Plex content on my PC as a remote; the file is still being played locally on my PC and is not in fact being casted from my phone. When I try to return to the Plex app on my phone to resume, I almost always find that my phone is no longer casting and the Plex app reverts to the home screen. I then have to “re-cast,” and it doesn’t even remember what I was playing, so I also have to go into my library on my phone to select the file I want to resume in order to resume it.
This has proven particularly annoying, and it has made it rather difficult to use my phone as a remote for Plex, since I can’t pause and then take the Plex app out of focus for more than about a minute before the cast is lost. I either have to keep the video playing when I leave Plex, or I have to keep Plex in focus whenever paused. I can’t do both at once, or else I lost the cast, unless I return to the app very quickly. This issue only seems to occur when pausing. I really would prefer to be able to use my phone as a remote for Plex, since it allows me to conveniently select something to play with one hand using my phone while also keeping the rest of my library private from anyone else looking at the TV. It’s just so much more convenient, but only if I can remove this obnoxious glitch.
Does anyone have any ideas about how this problem might be solved? I would appreciate any response.
