Plex Is Drunk - Massive Play History Errors

New shows - or perhaps more accurately, old shows - are cropping up on my front page. Shows I watched years ago, that I haven’t touched or updated since I put them down. Insofar as I can tell, they haven’t been re-added, Plex just think I’m halfway through a few different episodes of a few different shows.

Here’s what I’m talking about - that’s just me, nobody else. I like the Grand Tour, but I didn’t watch that one episode 171 times. In fact, every show on that list isn’t reflective of my actual watching habits this week. They’re all in my library, but none of them have gotten screen time in at least a year. Those music plays are correct, or at least within spitting distance. Don’t judge, I’m been on a Phases kick.

Anyway, here’s my best guess: I’ve been playing a lot of music via both the browser, as well as Plexamp in the last week, and it seems like wires are getting crossed. Can songs, or their back-end association in Plex, get misinterpreted? Because I’d be willing to bet I could tag the ISS song that’s associated with that Grand Tour episode.

Any thoughts? I’ve grabbed the logs already, but I’m not sure what’s relevant to upload, and what’s better kept offline.

Disable Plex’s DLNA server and monitor if the phenomenon continues.

I see this happening when my daughter or another Managed User decides to mark old show watched (by series) for shows they won’t watch and doesn’t want to see in the feed. Do you have any Managed Users on the server that may have done this?

Toggled, I’ll give it a shot.

@Forkboy I share the server with a few other users, but there has been zero activity from anyone else in the past week. More striking is that some of the content shown in that screenshot isn’t available to anyone else. Not sure how they would have been able to have an influence.

@Wisdom Was worth a suggestion, hope the toggling helps.

Doesn’t look like this has made a difference. I’m still getting partially played items in my “Continue Watching” (Grand Tour again, 1:45 into an episode), while other, untouched media is being put into my “On Deck”

I’ll go through a full shut down/start up cycle of the server, and see if that makes it stick any better, but my hopes aren’t high.

Love to hear if you have more thoughts!

A little more to add:

  • The problem persists. Some of the shows brought up previously are still being flagged as partially played, and put into my Continue Watching and On Deck sections.
  • DLNA is definitely off.
  • The server’s been through a full power cycle, and is up to date.
  • I’m still suspect of Plexamp. Since last I check in on the play history, that’s been the sole source of music playback I’ve used. Furthermore, and perhaps this only adds to the complexity, but the media I’m playing back via Plexamp is already downloaded. They’re organized in playlists, downloaded through the app, and prefer downloaded media is selected. I’m really not sure how this might be muddling up the server play history - the option to track/continue counting plays may be checked - but that’s the best data I have.

Interested to hear if anyone has additional thoughts.

downloaded content from shared servers could have this issue, it’s fixed in the next release.

Love to hear it! Thanks for the quick input. Will I be looking for the update to hit PMS, or Plexamp?

Plexamp.

Delightful - between this and the repeat addition, you’re making me look forward to an app updated notification on my phone!

Repeat one! Repeat all! So much repeat.

Wanted to tap this once more. Just updated Plexamp today - honestly, thanks for the repeat - but the irregular play history is still rearing its head. I’ve cleared my On Deck of irregular listings and will provide more details after sitting down and trying to hash out if there’s any particular pain point.

Of note, I’m still playing (to the best of my knowledge) exclusively downloaded content through the app. My use case hasn’t changed, content aside, though I’m still seeing most of the same shows flagged as played.

damn, we’d love to figure this one out. is it easy for you to reproduce “live”? feel free to DM me and i can drop you into a support slack for more attention.
