Plex issues transcoding MKV on iphone / synology

Cellular Download is 4Mbps
Cellular Latency is about 22-24ms

I have always played plex from a TV or Roku. I have played a couple videos on my phone but it was when I was on Wi-Fi and that was a while ago.

I noticed yesterday when I wanted to play some videos for my daughter that the movies were not playing properly on the phone. I would get the Audio but would not get any video. I thought that this was possibly a problem with bandwidth so I downloaded the movie to the phone from plex. I tired to play it again and had the exact same problem. It seems that if I am on WiFi that the move will play properly and if I am on cellular that the movie is not playing. What logs could I get to try showing why this is happening?

Same happened to me, just delete the app and re install it. All was well again, no pain.

I just deleted the IOS app from my phone and installed it again. I selected the movie again and had the exact same thing happen. The audio will play but the video does not. Every once in a while I will get a freeze frame from the video.

I have been doing some research on this and some people online are saying that the iphone cannot play the MKV file type form plex. Do we know if that is the case?

In settings/advanced there is a player selection. Are you using the old player

I am not using the old player. I saw that option earlier and did try it. I just went back and tried it again but still having the same issues.

I have no issue playing mkv on my iPad as i use mkv exclusively.

With your ipad are you on wifi or are you on cellular?

Mine seems to play when I am on my home wifi. I havent tried a remote wifi but my internet has at least 400 up and 400 down every time I check it.

I was however able to play an mp4 wihtout an issue over cellular.

I did just try the mp4 again and it wasnt working until I set the playback to Original. Does that mean it was transcoding and maybe my synology cant transcode?

mind me asking if your plex runs on Synology or something else?

I run my server of a iMac 27" 2020, done so for 8 years on two different Macs.

I have it down pat, with a string of WD external drives.

I would use a NAS as storage and backup only in your case, I find the new Macs wake from sleep well and energy cost are minimal.

Then again I have solar cells

Well, i just gave plex a transcode directoy on the NAS and i actually got a little bit of video. It was choppy and paused at times but it was something I havent gotten yet. I wonder if an SSD drive for the plex transcoding would help…

I have read the advantage of a SSD are minimal with Plex, except for wake times on LAN

I have the ability to put in an m.2 2280 in the Synology or I could put in an SSD and use one of my bays. Guess I need to see if anyone else with Synology does anything like this? I am thinking the SSD would be better and then put the plex transcode on that SSD so its faster.

It may help you if you added a Title that does not play xml file and add you NAS model, to reach a better understanding with forum members.
