Plex keeps "forgetting" my Synology NAS

Hey everyone,

I have no idea which part is important about my case so I’ll try to give you every detail I can think of.

I’m using a Synology DS718+ NAS with Plex version 1.13.5.5291 which seems to be the latest version as it says it’s up to date. Originally I installed Plex manually with a .PKS file downloaded from the official Plex homepage.

I’m using Plex every day on my early 2014 Macbook Air, and ocassionally on my Philips smart TV and my iPhone SE too (all connecting to the same NAS obviously), and most of the time, it works like a dream, even on remote access.

In the morning everything works perfect, I can access my library on any of my gadgets. Let’s just say 3 hours later I can still access my Plex library on my iPhone from my office using remote access, no issues at all. Then something happens, and the system goes down. Same iPhone, same network, and the whole thing’s gone, Plex shows a suggestion to check if everything’s OK with the server, so I get back home at the end of the day to find out that my MacBook and my TV are both gone too. My Plex TV app says “The connection to the server was lost” (DLNA dead too), and my MacBook just doesn’t see my NAS as a server option. The funny thing is, at this point, Plex on my iPhone starts to work again.

As Plex is gone, I headed back to DSM via Safari hoping I could find something useful. First I tried File Station, which can access all of my folders with ease, I can even play movies with its built-in media player. Then I checked file permissions, Plex has write/read checked as usual on the folders it needs to work with. So it seems that the NAS is absolutely working online, but Plex just can’t see it as a media server, even though it worked flawlessly a few hours before in the same environment. With no other options left, I restarted my NAS (Options - Reboot), and guess what, after rebooting Plex can access my NAS on all of my gadgets again. So we know rebooting helps in this case, but I wouldn’t restart my NAS in every 1-2 days.

I have a Sagemcom 3686AC router from my ISP, no big deal, but does the job. Fast, stable all the time, the necessary port forwarding (32400) is done too so I don’t know if it has anything to do with the issue. The NAS and the TV are both in wired connection with the router, the MacBook and the iPhone are connected wirelessly to the same network.

All ideas and suggestions are much appreciated. Thank you for your time!
