Been thinking of this since i started using Plex years ago, why don’t they have a Kids channel?
A channel you can change the backdrop out, to something more like a pre-school crayon look and only have kids content from your collection that’s suitable for the little tikes.
I know i could just make a library for kids content and all, but it would really help the little ones to maneuver in the channel with easier GUI and more relative backdrops.
What a GREAT idea!!! I love the idea of being able to change the background, etc… I like the channel idea so you can still have TV show library and Movie library and Music library but with a better GUI for kids say 4-12…
Why couldn’t you create a Kids user? You could then use the filters already established in Plex. You can filter on ratings, add labels to content you approve for the kids and add the label to the account.
The account above is for a friends kids when they come over. My child is 25 now. Once I launch Plex and put them in the kids account I hand the remote to them and they play what they want. The kids are between 3 and 10. The 3 year old even knows how to control what he wants to play.
Not as far as I know. But right now you are asking for a feature that would bloat the UI for most of the users. If you need different Profiles and load different Picture for a Media Server, just so someone has a more “colorful” experience (instead of a slick design), I guarantee Plex Pass users would gather in a shit storm. 1) about the change and second about why dev’s time is being wasted.
I mean look at what happened with v7 from mobile and that was actually a good update.
Not if you make the choice of backdrop local Storage and not a dev server storage concept. I’m not asking for templates and nor the sort, just the option to change, nothing more. How that would be considered bloat I don’t know, but give us the option and let the people do the rest on their local systems.
Not to be rude or anything, but the new design in the lastest build is more of a mess then slick, things are placed wrongfully if you ask me, stability in connection went down hill and the backdrop is more or less dull.
Very simple fix to this issue… Allow users to design custom GUI’s… MANY software programs allow this. Release the SDK for the GUI and then users can go nuts with it!!! Users could then share their GUI’s with others. Just like being able to design a new look/feel for Firefox, Chrome, etc… This way you don’t take up the developers time. They must already have a way to edit the GUI themselves… release it and let the users do the work!!! They could then have an OFFICIAL GUI page where APPROVED (means they actually work correctly on the clients they are designed for) GUI’s can be installed by others.
I secound that, it’s like the plugins for finding meta data for your stuff. Make the option and let other free service companies sort it out from their databases. By doing that you are not violating the size of Plex, let alone slowering it down and makin’ it heavy to operate.
Keep Plex as a core system and make the option to build on it, plugins, sync with other companies etc.
If they can make a Plex cloud option (which in my opinion is useless and slow AF). Then this should be a walk in the park.
Actually not a bad idea and worth a feature request. Not sure whetever it is already possible with plugins. But I guess not, I at least have not seen anything the like.
But it’s not what is asked for here. You can create a Kids Channel, an age restricted account (it would be a whole different story if you couldn’t). And honestly I think you underestimate kids if you think they can’t handle plex as it is.
The problem I have with the Feature suggestion is that there are some requests that make existing features usable and some that enhance the width of which Plex operates.
As example we have some people that wish to have audiobooks and can continue play at some point on them. For them audiobooks are kinda garbage until they have their stuff fixed. Which I think is important. Requests like this one: “[Feature request] Fix sync on mobile devices” I am not even going into detail. (For me it’s a bug that hopefully gets fixed soon. De facto my only problem with the new design so far is this bug)
My main focus and I even support requests with votes that don’t give me anything, is that our Plex experience gets…fluid. That means perfecting existing features and existing functionalities before adding new ones.
Perfect the way we can play the files we are given. (Audiobooks) Perfect the way we can use the recommendation Future (atm garbage). Maybe the ID3 Tagging would make sure our Music library is cleaner and more robust?
After that? Alexa, google voice integration? Customizable GUI? Sure!
But if you don’t take your time to “Fix” the things we have, the things to fix get more and more, the more features you add.
I don t think Plex pays enough for me to consider it.
I have a bit of experience in managing an IT Company. That is probably why I have a bit a different view then the “I want it that way. Why is no one giving me what I need right now?!”
If you suspect Illuminati working with plex through me to assassinate your wonderful, enriching idea, I won’t stop you from believing.
Looks like offense was taken. Just a tip for you, speaking as a guy who works in a tech call center, then using the term “we” is a way of addressing the company.
I’m sure the community can speak for itself, nor need a voice for that
