Plex lagging on 3rd gen firestick

Been using plex for about a month or two now. really enjoying it on my smart TVs samsung 4k and insignia 4k. both are less than 2 years old and play all my plex media flawlessly. on my 5 year old tv vizio a smart tv but limited apps I got a 3rd generation firestick just to be able to use all the modern apps. got plex on there and it’s usually very slow to start and always pixelated. the picture doesn’t actually stop but it’s very pixelated.

I read other posts where people say smart TVs are slow but external devices such as roku firestick etc are much smoother. this is very opposite for me. few details. this tv is right next to my router. still wireless. but by far the closest tv. I have the firestick connected to the 5ghz bandwidth instead of 2.4. any solutions would be great. I’m not that tech savvy so dumbing it down would be nice. thanks.

I would try switching it to the 2.4GHz and see if it changes anything. 2.4GHz can do up to 300Mbit on Wireless N and none of your files should be that large, and 2.4 has the added benefit of being stronger at range. 5GHz signals break up faster because the wavelength is much shorter.

Barring that, going into the settings on the firestick and setting everything to Maximum "Local and Remote streaming, etc). Just see where that gets you if anywhere, and report back.

hmmm switch firestick to maximum settings?

First thing to do is disable the new video player in options, it’s rubbish, the old one works much better.

If the issue is on H264 content (likely), adjust video setting Maximum H264 to something higher, or disable it all together, ignore the error message written by the comedian in the plex coding team.

go to the left side menu, click on your username at the top, then go to settings. In there there are a lot of settings that are “Remote Quality” “Local Quality” etc. Switch all of those to maximum under both Audio and video.

it was the home streaming. I had it set to maximum. switched too 2mbps and it works flawless. why is this? what is not handling max. server or firestick

Umm, that’s actually quite odd that setting to 2Mbps cleared it up… That indicates that the wifi strength may not be where it needs to be. Did you make the change over to the 2.4GHz to see if you have better luck there? Out of curiosity, where is the Wifi Router located in relation to the Firestick? Is it through a bunch of rooms? or?

the tv itself is literally 8 feet away. no walls. the other tvs that work smooth are on the 2nd floor. I did change it to 2.4ghz. didn’t do anything. it’s annoying that I have tons of 1080p movies and can’t watch them on this new firestick.

I have the 2019 FireStick 4K and it’s far superior to my Sony Android TV. So, my experience is definitely different from yours. I just don’t know why it’s being pixellated. Put it back to maximum instead of 2Mbit, and do like Schtevo suggested above, go to the “Advanced” portion of the settings, and where it says “Enable new media player” turn that to off. See what happens.

I have the non 4k fire stick. still 3rd generation. does that matter?

ok. so I figured some of it out. it was the h264 ■■■■ like mentioned above. everything is running as smooth as butter now in 1080p. the only issue that remains is one tv show. “AVI” format still stutters. the file is probably 10 years old. it will play fine on 2mbps per second. but maximum kills it. just stutters along. weird. but at least everything else is 1080p again.

Glad you figured it out. the Maximum H.264 level is a bug, I thought they fixed it, but apparently not. Mine were never impacted for some reason.

yeah me too. it was annoying as hell. I’ll miss diners drive ins and dives. but at least I have everything else in 1080p now.
