Plex live TV/Roku OS 12.5 fails on 1080i channels

Appears to have fixed it here, too!

This is working. 2hrs now without any issues on 1080p!

The Roku Plex preview channel working for me on multiple Rokus without issues for hours.

OMG I am so glad I found this thread. This issue was plaguing me and making me want to pull my hair out. It was even happening to me on 720p and 480i channels. I enjoy the Roku ecosystem, but leave it to them to incorporate new APIs in Roku 12.5 for monitoring the current amount of available memory for a channel and getting the device user agent. Thanks Plex devs for the Plex Preview update! This fixed my Roku crashing issues on all source live TV channels (1080i as well as 720p and 480i)!!!

I’m having this issue too. Roku Ultra on 1080i channels cause a crash after about 5-10m. Roku 4K causes a crash when I try to go back to the menu.

So this fix partially works for me. I see the MPEG2 experimental feature fix available now. It fixed my issue with my Roku Ultra. However, it’s still broken with my Roku Express 4K device. When I direct-stream a 1080i live TV show, the show will play fine, but if I try to go back to the menu/TV Guide, it causes the Roku to go black for a while and reboot.

So far the MPEG2 experimental feature fix has been working on 2 of my Rokus where I have it enabled. This is welcome news as I have been having to enable transcoding, bypassing direct stream which caused me to start experiencing another known issue: the HW transcoder failing issue with certain Intel chips. These two issues in effect made Plex unusable on all of my Rokus for a time.

I have two complaints with this issue.

#1: Why did I have to find this thread to find out the possible fix for this problem? I have had this issue for a couple of months now and frankly, I stopped using Plex for live TV even though I was still paying for it. Plex should have alerted us to this.

#2: I just loaded and tried the Plex Preview Channel on Roku. Guess What? It still crashes. The first channel I tried seemed to be ok, but when I changed channels, the second channel crashed twice within a minute or so.

Please tell us what to do next?

It’s been a month and this thing still is crashing my 4K Roku device when I go back to the TV guide while streaming a 1080i channel. My server isn’t powerful enough to transcode, and I don’t want to upgrade my hardware because this feature is broken.

With the Roku client Mpeg2 and Mpeg2 experimental options enabled, I still get reboot crashes (not super frequently, but still happens) with latest plex preview (7.14.5) on Roku 3820RW and 4200X models.

I have also noticed that time line seeking in a Live recording can trigger the crash. The time line seeks are super unreliable also, sometimes jumping to live, then having to rewind or start over and fast forward. It’s ultra annoying when you’re just trying to skip a few commercials. If I don’t do any seek operations the playback with those options seems mostly stable. The timeline seek issue also seems to be happening in other non-Roku clients as well.

@ljunkie I’m happy to capture logs or do any testing on my models. Currently streaming from a HDHomeRun Quattro and latest PMS (Version 1.40.0.7775) on windows.

Also seeing this. Specifically for me, it’s when recording a live show and watching on a delay. Fast forwarding sometimes jumps live, other times jumps to the very beginning of the recording. Turning the new experimental setting off seems to fix the seeking problems.

@awood I’ll have to try that again then, last time I tried it did not fix the seeking problems. Can you report :

  • Roku client app version
  • Plex Media Server version and platform
  • Tuner information - model, etc

My version info:

  • Server version: 1.40.0.7775 on Windows
  • Roku client version: 7.14.5.8943-041961b59-PlexPreview and 7.13.9.8924-fee2a403a-Plex on models 3820RW and 4200X
  • Android client version: 10.6.0.5141(3aa3109) on ChromecastHD TV and 10.5.0.4996(5d68759) on firestick 4k
  • Tuner: HDHomerun Quatro Model: HDHR5-4US Firmware: 20231214

@goellnjh I just watched a live NFL game on ~30 minute delayed start and successfully fast-forwarded through commercials without the brutal jump-to-live bug. Note that the game was on ABC which is 720p for me locally. I plan to try again with the games tomorrow which are on CBS & NBC at 1080p/i.

Plex settings:
Allow MPEG2: Yes
Experimental 1080p MPEG2: No

  • Roku client app version
Plex app v7.13.9.8924-fee2a403a-Plex (main release channel), Roku v12.5.0 build 4176-CG, on TCL Roku TV
Note anecdotally I had similar success with a Roku Express 4k and Roku Stick 4k last week with the same settings and Plex app version.

  • Plex Media Server version and platform
    1.32.8.7639 on Windows

  • Tuner information - model, etc
    HDHomeRun Flex Duo

I thought that CBS and NBC switch to 720p when broadcasting sports or other similar content…

Anyways, for me, who uses Comcast and a cablecard tuner, all programming is 720p regardless of how the signal is broadcast. :frowning:

Interesting, not sure about that but I’m just going by what plex tells me. When I allow MPEG2 streaming and have the experimental 1080p setting ON, it shows CBS and NBC as 1080i, seemingly regardless of content. With the experimental feature OFF, my server shows it transcoding from 1080i to 1080p (sadly using 96% of my weak CPU).

@awood so it seems like our server versions are massively different (1.40.x vs 1.32.x), I can’t reproduce your success with just toggling app settings on the device itself… which leads me to continue thinking that this jump to live issue is server side. It would be truly amazing if a plex developer/employee could weigh in on this horrendously awful software behavior! perhaps @OttoKerner or @morganj can point us in the right direction on getting this resolved?

Plex team, this is still an ongoing problem! Roku’s crashing! Can’t seek while recording without timeline jumps all over! Doesn’t this aggravate the heck out of all the devs using the time-shifting DVR functionality!?

Still an ongoing problem in PMS 1.40.2.8351 and on Roku (and android).

Plex team, I’m shocked that no one has addressed this issue, it would drive anyone on the dev team crazy the first time they experienced it. Is there no testing or usage going on for DVR functionality in Plex?!

Steps to reproduce seek issue:

  1. set a DVR recording to occur
  2. allow the recording to record for 5-ish minutes
  3. open up plex roku client and go to live-tv and select the in-progress recording and play from beginning
  4. allow the in progress recording to play for a minute
  5. seek forward in the recording a few seconds
  6. seek forward again and look at the timeline and scratch your heads wondering how it could be so wacked out!
  7. do this a couple times and watch the Roku Plex app crash

I still get crashes fairly often as well, even with Plex transcoding. However, using a HDHomeRun EXTEND with the Transcode Profile set to heavy\highest quality, seems to be working OK. At least I haven’t noticed it crashing.

Plex shows this during playback with HDHomeRun doing the transcoding.
Video 1080i (H.264) Direct Stream
Audio English (AC3 5.1) Direct Stream

ĀÆ\_(惄)_/ĀÆ

The prior Roku client would only transcode 1080i MPEG2TS streams while allowing 720p to pass. This is with the box checked ā€œAllow MPEG2ā€ and not checking the box for 1080p.

The latest version doesn’t recognize 1080i and allows it to pass untouched causing my Soundbar Pro to crash after a couple of minutes.

So I had to uncheck ā€œAllow MPEG2ā€ to watch live tv.
