Plex-media-player 2.58.1 loading indefinitely for any Movie/TV show. Web works fine

Server Version#: plex-media-player 2.58.1
Player Version#: plex-media-server-plexpass 1.40.2.8395

Server is fine, various other clients are fine. But the Linux app has recently stopped being able to play any content regardless of settings as of an update last week.

Using a browser on the impacted machine (firefox 125.0.3) works fine taking a few additional seconds than usual to kick off due to needing to convert most content to the Maximum conversion preset rather than playing the content directly.

The app version of Plex hangs indefinitely waiting for video to begin playing but it never does.

Client Kernel version: 6.8.9-arch1-1

Client NVIDIA driver version: 550.78

This was all working a few weeks ago before updating and having held back the linux kernel and nvidia-dkms packages for a while waiting for ZFS to support the latest kernel. Though it may be unrelated.

I have a 12th Gen i7 laptop with only an integrated gpu (Iris Xe Graphics) of an identical SOE presenting with the same issue so I’m inclined to believe this problem is not related to the desktop’s NVIDIA gpu for playback.

This player isn’t supported anymore. It’s been years, actually.

There are Plex for Linux, Plex HTPC, and Kodi with the inoffical PM4K add-on
as replacements.

I’m going to miss plex-media-player but plex-desktop 1.58.1 exhibits identical behavior.

Visiting in my browser directly via https://serverHostnameHere.home.internal continues to play content just fine though must transcode which isn’t ideal.

Yeah still cannot use this at all. No plex.

The current version of Plex Desktop is 1.92.1. The current version of Plex HTPC is 1.60.1 via Flathub and 1.61.1 via Snap.

Also, Plex Media Server and the 6.8 kernel do not yet play nice together due to Intel driver issues (thread). There might be some spillover for the desktop apps.

You might try updating to the most current release available.

Also, check Settings → Plex for Windows → Player + Show Advanced. If enabled, try disabling Use Hardware Decoding.

I see. It looks like this AUR package for plex-desktop has been orphaned for quite some time. I’ll reply back after testing the latest version.

Trying to put together a package for 1.92.1 throws endless errors over libavacoded.so.59 and others without starting.

I was able to get the latest version to work with flatpak in a temporary environment but I don’t want to install snap or flatpak on this system just to use this application.
