Plex Media Player 3.0 feedback

Running latest PMS and PMP 3.0.0-32 on a Mac Mini i5 2018 w/ 32 GB RAM and plenty of disk space (items on share and Big Sur). The UI is pretty slow loading. The latest of 2 was a bit better.

I just found out about PMP 3, and reading through this thread I’m really confused. I though PMP was discontinued in 2019 and only serious bugs would be fixed. Then the Plex team release a V3 preview built after that announcement, but then abandon it as well?

What’s the deal here? I hope I’m not getting my hopes up for nothing.

No one really knows. PMP and its 10-foot interface was scrapped in favor of Plex for Mac/Windows, but then the massive pushback from the HTPC crowd led them to pivot and say they’d support it for bug fixes for a while.

v3 might be the next gen of the HTPC app. Or it might have been prior to PMP being scrapped long-term. No one knows, the devs/company have been silent. In all likelihood they are not devoting attention to PMP because it’s not a platform they want to support. There hasn’t been legitimate development of an HTPC app since Plex Home Theater, circa 2014/2015. The migration to PMP was botched from the start and during that time it appears the internal development resources have entirely shifted to media devices.

tl;dr it’s likely abandonware, don’t expect updates. Hope I’m wrong on this, but expect that’s not likely.

Really sad and people without clunky additional hardware remotes are left in the rain. It was working great, while it was maintained and a bluetooth keyboard for the couch will always be faster than any remote which clutters the desk and collects dust. Oh well, this must be what it feels like to be getting old I guess.

If at some point they make it possible to navigate the new app with keyboard only I would be happy. But the current version is unusable from a smart remote.

Yeah, I’m confused as well. Which Plex app should I be using on my HTPC? (It’s also my Plex server, so it’s not going anywhere.) I use it as option A or B daily, with my old pal Xbox One (but PMP has better media support). The non-beta hasn’t been updated since May, and the “new” beta is even older. To be fair, there are no huge problems (for my use), just wondering what Plex player people are using on HTPC these days.

I really wish someone at Plex would just communicate what the plans are here. Just keep us somewhat updated, at least every few months. No promises (sh-t happens), just pass along some info. When that fails to happen, you can’t blame people for eventually (after months or years of being ignored) assuming the worst about the company’s direction.

To be honest there is no development with Player and due to an uproar it was kept with only minor fixes to be adopted. PfW or PfMac is a good option to use on your server machine. As for communications there was plenty, I would recheck your email preferences from the forum.

I am mostly referring to communication regarding PMP 3.0 (esp. since last release). To be fair, it’s clear Plex did not care for PMP (before community response, and possibly even after). And probably reluctantly tested feasibility and difficulty migrating to 3.0
which ended in a resounding, “Oh, God, no, make it stop” from the team. And it did.

And your point, this is not news. To me it’s the way it is now and all your saying is ancient news.

PMP is still the only HTPC client, just poorly/not maintained as you’re seeing. Lack of HDR passthrough support made me migrate to using the Plex for Kodi add-on (not even the official one at that, that’s effectively been abandoned too) coupled with MadVR and an external player (MPC-BE). This is all on Windows.

I disagree with @SE56, the new Plex app isn’t a viable HTPC alternative and wasn’t intended to be. It targets people who use Plex on laptops and it is controlled by a trackpad/mouse. They’ve more or less abandoned the HTPC/big screen interface outside of streaming clients like Apple TV or the Shield.

And communication on this was atrocious, really bananas what people construe as acceptable dialogue.

I agree, the Plex for windows app is useless to me without remote control support.
Its a shame they won’t add it.

I actually think it’s time to start making some noise on this
And when I mean make some noise, we need to keep posting against this topic to keep it positioned at the top of the Forum list.

For Plex to go silent for so long is not right, and eventually someone will have to say something!

What was the point of version 3 if they were not going to do anything with it?

Right on @axemanuk666!

So Plex when is PMP3 going to be released?

PMP (3) has pretty much been Bump to web-client releases for the past 6+ months looking back at the release notes. Yes a couple of other things got add but small fries really.

PMP (2) could easily if plex dev wanted, do the same bump of web clients and keep this client going. However, its not in their vision or road map so will just not happen. Thankfully it still works and long may that last.

PMP (3) will never be a solution for me until they add Linux desktop support.

Indeed, which begs the question
 what is going on?

I see that @OttoKerner posted in this thread in it’s earlier days. Perhaps he has some insight into what might be happening?

Nothing will go on with PMP in the foreseeable future.
PMP in the state it is now will be “kept running”, but will gain no new features.

A real pity – it should be a small cost to have dev re-spin the PMP 2 build with the latest Web-client and nothing else (like was done for years when it was in development).

Thanks for the reply Otto. It’s a shame, as for the most part, it still works really well. All it really needs is proper HDR / Dolby Vision support and its near on perfect!

Oh well
 :disappointed:

Why does Plex Inc. insist on abandoning the HTPC market?
You have the premium Media Server product, great clients across all the appliances, TVs etc, but ignore this one critical part of the eco-system.
Many of your most ardent supporters have invested heavily in home theaters that are driven by PCs for many different reasons.
I don’t understand why you wont support this use case.

Seems like Plex Inc
, was again, making empty promises when they wrote:

:wave:t3: Hello, fellow forum travellers and Plex lovers :wave:t3:

We’ve heard you, loud and clear; we’ve had a number of discussions internally over the last few days, and we come bearing three commitments to you:

  1. We will keep PMP in TV mode working as it is today and will fix serious issues which impact the product for the foreseeable future.
  2. We will continue to invest in our player technology on streaming devices both to increase media compatibility, as well as to bring more “HTPC” features there (e.g. video zoom modes). We will also do a better job at communicating their capabilities, as it’s pretty hard to get an accurate picture of that. Look for more information on that soon!
  3. We are now actively investigating the best way to continue supporting HTPCs as a platform.

Thank you all for speaking up and sharing your views (the vast majority of you did so in a kind and constructive way), we always appreciate it! To the one guy who called me a suit, well, I’m not going to live that one down
