PMP vs Plex for Windows

Why are there no advanced settings (Like OpenGL or Buffer size) in Plex dir Windows?

Those are only available in TV Mode in Plex Media Player.
Plex stutters as hell in non OpenGL mode here on my new machine.

Best Wishes

Plex Media Player is the older program that was designed to be part of a home theater solution so it has many advanced settings for audio and video.

Plex for Windows is a desktop app and not meant to have all the bells and whistles that PMP has.

“Plex” – PMP or PfW?

And what is the version number?

Plex for Windows stutters because it has almost NO additional settings.
Why release such a downgraded app when PMP can do it all?

I’m not quite sure if I can follow your argument.
Would you mind describing what exact issue you got and under what circumstances this issue occurs?
The additional info requested by darcilicious could also help…

  • what kind of platform / OS do you use to host your Plex Media Server (e.g. NAS vs. dedicated device, what OS and OS version…)?
  • which version of the Plex Media Server do you use?
  • what windows version is your Plex client running on?
  • which version of the Plex client do you have installed?

I’m not saying you’re wrong… your argument just feels like you’re saying your car broke down because it has an automatic drive (therefore lacking a stick / shift lever).

PMP has additional settings that fixes the stuttering. OpenGL was it for my case. PfW does not have this and I do not understand why it exists.

Again… no offense.
I’d like to clarify for my own peace of mind if you’re actually looking for help / a solution to your problem or… not?!

I already fixed it using PMP. The Problem that remains ist why PfW is existing and forced to the users?

Nothing forced on anyone… there’s a reason why Plex Media Player is still around for users who either want a home theater platform or prefer the look & feel.

But why does PfW exist when PMP is even better?
And it IS forced. The download page even hides PMP and only delivers PfW. How do you call that?

The new Plex desktop app are the official desktop client. That’s where Plex is putting its energy and adding new features etc. (see e.g. the blog post linked above).

The “classic” Plex Media Player is still around for users with the above mentioned use cases.

You clearly don’t like the new client (and might do so for good reasons – as for your use case). Let’s try to remain open that other users might have a different use case or not run into your specific troubles with the client.
There’s not much of a discussion here…

Did you read the blog post?
Plex had big plans to discontinue PMP.
The HTPC community refused to take it laying down - took over the forum, basically - Plex changed their minds.

Now - since Plex knows that HTPC crowd WILL come out of the woodwork - TV View Mode is being continued for PMP. It will not be devloped for PfW/M. Plex had to develop their own work-around (Payback!).

I call that an omission/oversight/too busy to work on the web page (for the moment) - one the HTPC contingent is watching closely.

Yup - so many came out of the woodwork - there was no woodwork left.

Conclusion: PMP is the real deal and PfW is the downgraded Version missing many settings and Features.

Still no answer why PfW was even developed.

Asked and answered.

I don’t think you’re really looking for an explanation (as e.g. given in the linked blog post from above).

And you don’t have to… nor will anybody claim your perception is invalid. Even with that in mind… let’s acknowledge that Plex for Windows not meeting your requirements doesn’t make it a general downgrade / useless for everyone. There’s a huge group of users that don’t have those problems who prefer the new client.

Considering this thread is going nowhere, I’m out. Enjoy your Plex Media Player

One Last Thing:
Does PMP have all the Features of PfW (except for downloads)?

Probably not - yet.

Easy enough to install both - and pick the one you need at the time you need it.
Like the rest of us do.

@tom80H Why are you guys forcing a half baked Plex for Windows on us when it isn’t ready for prime time usership? Plex for Windows doesn’t even have audio passthrough. Why can’t you guys put the advanced settings such as DTS/Dolby passthrough into the new application? These are the exact advanced settings the OP is referring too.

I also don’t understand why the decision was made to switch to downloading media instead of allowing us to re-encode media? We NEED to be able save space on devices that don’t have giant hard drives . . . Sync was great when it worked and the solution shouldn’t be to scrap it all together but to actually make it work properly!

Finally someone courageous enough to speak out loud what I tried to say.

PfW is a half baked, downgraded Version of PMP. Why, just why?
