Plex media player buffering locally

Server Version#:
Player Version#:

Question hoping someone can help with.
Why would a file played locally direct, buffer in PMP but not PHT?

could be lots of reasons…

  • poor network bandwidth (ranging from network quality to available bandwidth vs. bandwidth of the video you’re trying to watch)
  • something about the container / stream codecs not being supported on your client

I would agree at some level, however playing the same file on the either client, which are both hosted on the server ( I5, 6Gb), PHT does not buffer, yet PMP does.

I’ve also had occasional buffering in PMP, where PMP is located on the same machine as PMS. Found it very strange.

Unfortunately I don’t have any logs, I mostly use the Apple TV client nowadays. (Not a big fan of the PMP UI)

If you disable Direct Stream and/or Direct Play in PMP’s preferences, it is prone to buffering like any other client.
Restricting the bandwidth in its preferences will do the same.

Nope direct stream enabled. Dumped PMP and installed openPHT, works fine.

I have both Direct Stream and Direct Play enabled.

play something in PMP and then check PMS to see if PMP is transcoding instead of direct playing when you play something

if it is transcoding, it might be a DNS rebind protection issue, and PMP thinks its connecting via WAN and using the ‘remote’ quality settings in PMP

Nope checked via tautulli, direct stream

I recently began having this same issue. Buffering while playing locally.
Did you come up with a fix for this?

Same problem here, I posted about it recently

Yes, installed Open PHT, that seemed to fix, although not sure why
