Plex Media Player end of life?

Server Version#: 4.24.2
Player Version#: 4.24.1

As I understand the evolution that comes with the living of life, I find joy in change that brings fourth advances in how we live this life. Out with the old and in with the new!

But if there is anything I have learned from living this joyous life, is the future is not guarantied.

For years now, I have been a big fan of PLEX. I expect I will manage to get by without the true PC “Plex Media Player”, that I came to PLEX for in the first place, being updated and supported. I guess I will hobble along as long as I can with the last release, whenever that is?

This new interface for the PC that is simply called “Plex”, is fine in all ways that one would need it for playing back media in a sitting at your computer with 2 channel stereo. What happened to the support for a Home Theater?

For me, the Home Theater is how I experience using PLEX. A beautiful 65" TV on the wall and 6.2 channel surround sound. I haven’t found anywhere in “PLEX” where there is support any longer for DTS-HD MA 7.1 or Dolby Atmos.

As Long as “PLEX” will have the ability to be setup to support High-End, Home Theater and the ability to playback all my media at it’s true highest setting, I will happily migrate to PLEX from the PLEX Media Player.

I’m afraid that there is a big lose for me as PLEX moves forward in the media marketplace. If on the other hand, this new interface can support the same equipment the PLEX Media Player supports, I would say we would have a win, win!

Can the support for HD Audio and multiple channels, 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 etc. be incorporated into “PLEX”? The code has been written, right? How about adding it to “PLEX”?

All seems a bit sad, that the future of PLEX seems to be going away from how I use it.

As long as I can use the last release of Plex Media Player for as long as the company exists, I’m good. But so far the new “PLEX” Windows software that I have tried to use, is in no way able to provide the result I am looking for. Please try harder to not loose capabilities you now have as you move forward.

Thanks for your time, if you really give it to me!

Gary

From what I have read Plex media Player is hear for the foreseeable future.

I do not know where you think server version is 4.24.2 as it is currently 1.18.7.2457 the Web app is 4.24.2

I’m requesting this discussion to be deleted

Reference : Plex Media Server

For your current Device versions: PMs settings / Authorized devices.

Before making harsh statements as end of life, you need to become familiar with Plex apps and server. Which is obvious you have not. If you need this discussion deleted ask a moderator to do so immediately.

That post is highly modified from when I replied, in fact almost all of it

To make a simply reply to your comment. First, I had just updated my Plex Media Player to 2.51.0.1048. It was during this update that I received a POP UP window that indicated the need to migrate to the PLEX app and away from Plex Media Player. This is why I was moved to make my first post.

And, my mistake on where I cut and pasted the version of the server software from. It is, in fact. 1.18.7.2457. Sorry if that was such a problem, but I think that the POP UP window that initiated my post, is the thing that is the most disconcerting. Maybe I am jumping to conclusions. I hope so.

I must ask are you writing in your native language?

You do not have to migrate at all, stay with PMP.

The fact is - like their dream of a unified interface - a unified roadmap for PMP and the messages Plex is sending to all it’s various notifications and announcements - are all different.

The Blog says one thing
Forum Posts say something else - depending who is writing them

We were told by the ‘Big Cheese’ PMP would be staying around. At this point users simply don’t know what to believe. Here’s what I suggest:

Download and use PMP if you need it. Download and use PfW/M - so you’ll know how all it’s bits work (the bits Plex decides to include) and do like the rest of us that need PMP… wait to see what happens next.

Users are apparently ‘Need To Know’ - and apparently we don’t need to know.

or

Plex needs to bring all their message centers/pop ups/blogs/employees/etc. back under one roof, decide what they’re going to do and let us in on it.

The issue is that (assuming it’s true based on the pop up) that PMP is losing desktop mode. Yes it will stick around for people that have a big screen connected to their PC but going forward it will ONLY support “TV Mode” which is a 10 foot interface, no mouse support etc.

I use PMP and PfW next to each other on the same PC to see how they compare. Currently PMP blows PfW away, IMO. YMMV but you may want to consider that not everyone shares the same view or use case before you consider you have all the answers.

I do too.

PMP is ‘dragged’ to the TV, in TV Mode, opened and closed from the TV (that’s on 24/7) 'cause that’s where it’s used when it’s needed.

PfW/M opens on the primary desktop monitor, sized so it fits the second desktop monitor so when dragged there and dropped it’s ready to go.

If Plex is going to keep PMP/TV View around - they need to add it to the “Apps” link at the bottom of the page. When people find PMP ‘Hidden’ in a Forum Post - the message they take away from that might not be the message Plex wishes to convey. <—or maybe it is - we don’t know.

Thank you JuiceWSA.

You put it very clearly, which is opposite of what PLEX is doing. Mixed messages and confusing information is what started my post.

I simply want to maintain the quality interface that PLEX has brought into my home. I have paid for it and was glad to do so as a support for an amazing piece of technology. I just cringe at the prospect that it is on its way out. I hope not.

Seems to me that the PC apps, that include the Server interface and Plex Media Player and PLEX, could ultimately be brought together. But I’m just a silly old codger. What ever comes to be, so be it. I have seen many things come and go in my lifetime. Many I miss.

That can’t happen.

Plexweb runs in a browser window. A Browser is unable to do much of anything except be a platform to test the transcoder. Browsers can Direct Play almost nothing.

Either of the two ‘Player Apps’ do NOT run in Browsers, are stand alone and powerful Player Apps (one much more powerful than the other one). I have both and they both play a role in the Plexiverse.

Install 'em and select the correct weapon for the job at hand.

It is the way endeavor to to live my life. Use what is available to do the best job! Thanks

That was what I thought was on the screen when I clicked reply. That is what it should have said! This world of technology can bite us. But all in all, it is an amazing world we live in!

Just an FYI for those following this thread. There is a Plex Media Player v 3.0 available. This is a “preview” build of PMP 3.0 for Windows and MACs. I have been using for a while now and I have not had any issues with it. It still has “TV” mode, which is one of the reasons that I hope PMP will continue on.

Here is a link to the forum post about this build. Also note that this post has not been updated since October 2019.

…and we just recently saw an update for PMP 2.0?

I’m very confused. I’m new to using Plex (very) and was only thinking to use the music streaming around my house. Even that appears to be complex with players / casting / plex vs PMP.

Glad to see that even PMP v3 supports older macOS versions (10.12 and up) so that my older macbook can still join the party.
