Since it will be “EOL”, does it mean it will stop working? Or can we simply keep using it to enjoy the features we like, like 5.1 sound and subtitle delay keys? If it will still work, there is no reason to install the new app, but just keep watching stuff indefinitely with PMP.
Just without updates. But as they say, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.
PMP will not be updated after January 30, 2020, but you’ll still be able to use it if you want after that date. We tend to be very conservative with breaking changes in Plex Media Server and you’ll find that some very old clients still work today. That said, by no longer actively supporting it, there is no promise on how long it will continue to work.
Windows high dpi scaling issues will be fixed ASAP.
While the Desktop app has some keyboard shortcuts, just like the web app, keyboard navigation isn’t a focus like it is in the TV apps aside from accessibility concerns.
Good to hear about scaling but disappointing to hear about the keyboard support. Using a mouse is very awkward for navigating as opposed to arrow keys along with backspace and enter.
the new player is something like ORRIBLE, no support for remote controller like armony 950, no support for keyboard, no passthrought audio… cmon… no support for htpc connected to tv and avr…
the interface is ORRIBLE COMPARED to pmp…
what the hell!!!
Would love to, but the recent fix for studdering in the new Plex Player hasn’t been applied to PMP - SO IT’S USELESS!
The problem has been around for quite a while.
Promises of continued support for PMP only work if continued support for PMP is more than just a promise.
Jittery, studdery, jumping, staggering playback in Plex Player was literally solved overnight - EXACTLY THE SAME IN PMP, but remains unsolved. Suggest you get that team on the issue - they seem to know what they’re doing.
Problem identified.
Problem solved - less than a day:
You betcha, Matt - Smooth as glass.
Nice work.
PS: PMP needs the same medicine.
You’re ditching a media center focused app for this webkit rubbish that won’t have 5.1 bitstream output capabilities.
Well this thread just got a lot worse than I initially thought. Looks like it’s time for me to move on from Plex.
You guys should really consider more feedback from your PAYING users. I think you’d even find many lifetime Plex Pass users happy to contribute more for better service rather than being ignored.
@Ted_C They’re not dropping keyboard functionality, they’re dropping the whole desktop media center capabilities of Plex (Plex Media Player).
What they’ve done with “Plex for X” is quite simple, they’ve given us a web browser wrapper.
Let’s just be very clear here, Plex have not given us a “new player”. They’ve given us a web browser/webkit wrapper for the existing Plex Web App. Great way to repay the community that built you.
I was under the impression this was the ‘Buck Stopper’:
Is PMP going to be supported, or not?
If the same magical fix that was applied to the Plex Player overnight is inadequate for PMP, just say so. A little: “yep, we’re working on it” goes a long way…
What I don’t understand is the attitude of “We dropped that support, sorry” when talking about audio bitstream support. When people definitely want / need it. They should definintely work on adding that back to the new player.
Can you please explain why I’m not able to choose my audio device or channel configuration anywhere then?
As far as I can tell it appears to only use the default audio device (and only stereo) like browsers do.
@ericmatthys It really feels like you’ve had to cut costs due to lack of funds and so you tried to ditch the original community/platform/usage (HTPC) that built Plex. (Then changed your minds after backlash)
If you are lacking funds to run Plex (offering lifetime Plex Pass memberships can’t be great for revenue) then please just be honest and tell the community.
As a lifetime Plex Pass user I will happily pay more if it means I actually get a say in development going forward rather than years of useless new features (secondary to bug fixes it seems).
