Hi All,
I am new to Plex in every respect but want to get it installed and running on an HP Proliant N40l Microserver. This will be directly connected to a TV for local playback but also stream to other clients mainly iPads and iPhones. I have read numerous posts and articles on the web but I am rather confused. A lot of the discussions talk about PMS on linux or FreeNas but often as in the latter this is just a PMS plug in not the Home theater App. I am aware of the limitations of the hardware with the AMD Turin 1.5Ghz CPU being below the minimum hard ware requirements but other users have had success with this hardware even transcoding to 1080p, although I intend to rip all media to MP4 to avoid transcoding.
Is it possible to install both PMS and PHT on the same linux distro? If so which is the best (easiest) way to go? Some are clearly using Ubuntu and others Mint as well as other distos.
My requirements are fairly limited:-
1) Local playback via HDMI and supported graphics card
2) Streaming to other devices (primarily Apple but some Windows clients)
3) Option to install and rip DVDs to MP4 on the same hardware e.g. Handbrake (hence need for desktop os)
4) Most importantly it needs to be GUI driven and not command line. I have little or no Linux experience except for some installs of Puppy Linux many years ago and end users will expect some sort of point and click :)
Being in the UK I don't need access to HULU Netflix or some of the other streaming websites.
Any suggestions including prebuilt distros would be very much appreciated.
