I have an unRAID (version 6.8.3) server that I run Plex on in a docker container.

I am experiencing major problems with my Plex Media server. The problem has been going on for over a year now. The problem is that it starts with the home screen not being reachable. But I can still go into any library and see the recommended tab and it’s content. Then that stops working and I can only access the libraries tab in each library, and then also that stops working. Shortly thereafter I receive a message that the server is no longer reachable and I can’t even access the settings of the server. This course of events can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days to unfold.

Restarting the Plex server (Docker container) always solves the problem, but the problem always comes back.

In the log in the docker container I get lots of the following message:
Sqlite3: Sleeping for 200ms to retry busy DB.

I have tried to optimize the database. I have reinstalled the Plex server repeatedly. I first used Linuxserver’s docker container for Plex, but have switched to Plexinc docker container. I have had Plex on a separate SSD instead of on the cache.

The problem manifests itself on all connected devices at the same time as the problem manifests itself, both locally in my home network and externally.

I tested for 2-3 months and used Emby insterad which worked flawlessly. I was able to stream all content without any issues on all devices, both locally and externally outside my network. But I’d rather use Plex and want to try and find the cause of the problem. I have been using Plex since 2015 (if I remember correctly) and it is only since last year that there have been such issues.

I do nothing special for the error to be occour (what I know of) but use Plex as usual and stream.

I’ve also tried switching SATA cables, drives and so on. But as I got it to work flawlessnes on Emby I think it’s an software issue (or compatibility issue) rather than hardware issue.

I would very much appreciate any help I can get.

have you tried to repair the database (I don’t mean optimizing it but actually checking for corruption and attempting to repair)?

No, but I have created a complete new database about three times. Done a complete reinstall of Plex Server. The issue always comes back when all my libraries and it’s content has been added to the server. No issues at the beginning when I only have 20-30 series and perhaps a few hundred movies, but when I’m at almost 500 series and 7000+ movies, then the issue starts again.

Could it be that I have to much content?

Unlikely… if you search the forum, you’ll notice a number of users with significantly bigger libraries.

Yeah, that is what I’ve seen as well. I’ve spent so many nights roaming the forum, only finding people with similar issues.

I’ve tried something different now. Something I haven’t tried before. I also have a Nextcloud server and accessing that through Let’s Encrypt as reverse proxy. I have configured Plex using Let’s Encrypt as reverse proxy as well.

So far the Plex server respons more rapidly when clicking around in the libraries, both localy and outside my network. It’s to early to see if this solves anything, but will give it a go.

But does Let’s Encrypt cause any security issues instead of using Plex itself for encrypted connections?

Have you trimmed the statistics?

No, I haven’t tried that. I’ve totally missed that one in the forum. Never heard of trimming the statistics. Thanks for the tip!!

I follow up question though. I only want to understand how this works. If you know, why would a reboot help if the issue lies in the statistics? Does a reboot “trimm” some of the statistics?

I am not using docker but from the symptoms it sounds like memory or file fragmentation within the docker file. It could simply be how Unraid has implemented docker and there is a leak.
