Plex Media Server/Cache/PhotoTranscoder just keeps growing and growing

I’m not sure if this is a bug or by design but I would like to ask what the /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Cache/PhotoTranscoder is used for and if its ever purged and cleaned up.

I’m running on fedora 31 64bit and this folder every day just keeps getting bigger and bigger in size. Its current size 3.8gb. My server is on 24/7 so all scheduled tasks would run nightly. I have no photo’s in my library so I assume it has something to do with charter thumbnails.

Anyhow, as its a cache I would assume it should be cleaned up from time to time. I have been getting into the habbit of deleting its say every month but if there is a bug in this space its worth looking into.

That folder holds the thumbnails of all the images used by all the various clients. 3.8 GB seems like a lot but if you have a lot of content and lots of clients accessing your server, I guess it can get that big.

OKay, thanks. At least now I know what its used for. I have 3 clients that use my server on a regular basis and content is approx 1600+ movies and 17,000+ episodes. We also on average have 30 shows on the deck.

Would you know if the plexmediaserver prunes this cache over time or will it grow unbounded ?

I’m not positive, but I believe these do get removed if not accessed after a certain amount of time.

That seems about right… I am the only one using the server every day and basically just listen to music. I think I have over 12K albums… and mine is 5.82GB. This is on my shield pro with 500GB so I really don’t care.

Yeah, a couple of GB is not a big deal really but if it grew to 50GB+ then it might be. I also backup weekly so I might just delete this before taking a backup.

The cache is also the third largest folder on my plex server almost the same size as the media folder so was really curious what it was used for.
