for Synology. I use Shield for reading only.
You have a server set up on your shield. You might want to deactivate that, to save some memory and processing power.
Also, some recycle bin have a size limit. If many items are deleted at once, their size may exceed the allotted space limit for the recycle bin. Which then leads to the direct deletion of the items.
This piece of crap deleted almost 20 of my files PERMANENTLY! And the people who make this software act like they don’t know what we’re talking about. Unless they make a user-obvious way to STOP this behavior, I am not continuing to use and will dissuade anyone else I know from trusting their digital media to his junk.
And yet thousands upon thousands use Plex everyday with no problems whatsoever.
Thank about that for a minute.
Logs, Proof, more details please.
He can’t.
All he can think about, ATM, are those 20 missing soldiers… and their families.
After a suitable grieving period - we may be able to get to the bottom of it via some logs, or something.
I imagine hell will freeze over first.
Putting on my Avatar hat. I wonder how many with vanishing media are using Sonarr/Radarr etc…without knowing how to use it.
Or how many lost files are DVR files.
That would seem to be the most logical conclusion.
I also had Plex delete some of my media unexpectedly, although after digging through the log files it appears it was a somewhat self-inflicted problem.
In an effort to clear up some disk space, I used Plex to create optimized versions of some of my media (at a lower bitrate). I then deleted the original files and renamed/relocated the optimized versions to where the original files were. I have had success doing this before, but this time Plex identified that the optimized file had been renamed (and moved into a different directory) and that the original file had been deleted. Since the original file was deleted, Plex then deleted the renamed/relocated optimized version (since my understanding is Plex doesn’t allow you to have Optimized versions without the original).
I really wish Plex would allow me to delete the original file after I create an optimized version, but it looks like I’ll have to find a new way to lower the bitrate if I don’t want to lose more of my media.
Anyway, I just wanted to share what I found on my system. Perhaps other users have lost media because of a similar situation.
I believe there is a Plex dance for that…
That is correct, but Plex should only delete the optimized version while it is identified as the optimized version. If you move it to replace the original, it will remove the reference that an optimized version exists, but it should not delete the original.
I totally agree with you the only reason I had to go back to plex is because everyone who wants access to my media wants a pretty doodle interface Simplex is the only one that realistically has it
BUT Honestly speaking I don’t think this feature should even exist even if call the computer all folders zeroaccess f it should just be I remove Library folder oror deletion or whatever and only on raed mode with files even locked somehow someway Plex seems to be able to delete them this should not be a teacher blacks should not have overriding power higher than your OS if you want to delete a file you should delete it through whatever Explorer have not through software Plex get rid of the deletion Batman generally speaking nobody likes it generally speaking people don’t want their files deleted and if they do they’ll delete them through their File Explorer get rid of the deletion command HST remove Library folder remove Library listings there shouldn’t be a single word in your code the word delete
Plex doesn’t delete files normally… one’s it creates yes… but not media files.
I just had this happen to me for the first time. I have been using Plex with no issues for months. Then I updated a couple of days ago. Now I have entire seasons of TV shows that I wanted to keep GONE. Some of them were in my recycle bin but some are just GONE–presumably because the files were too large for the recycle bin and so were permanently deleted. I am EXTREMELY ANGRY as I had no idea this was possible or I would have NEVER trusted Plex with my media!! This is completely unacceptable and needs to be resolved IMMEDIATELY!
I would like to add that I have done nothing different. I have not optimized files. Nothing. It just seemingly randomly deleted my files after I updated the version of Plex. i must assume then that either there is a bug in the update or that Plex developers changed a default or some such ridiculous nonsense. I agree with the previous user, Plex should eliminate any sort of file deletion protocol COMPLETELY. Not everyone wants to delete media after they watch it. In fact, I would bet that most people don’t want an outside program deleting files from their hard drives. It’s intrusive and a terrible idea. Had I known this was a possibility I never would have installed Plex at all. I am BEYOND UPSET and completely frustrated.
And yes, nydave69, Plex absolutely deletes files. It did mine!
And yet others are having no problems what so ever…Maybe you need to go back and have another look at your setup, not just Plex but everything.
@Gjones766 Edit the show that got deleted. Check the advanced tab to see if these settings are set. This is the only delete mechanism that Plex has that won’t ask for a confirmation.
If you want to prevent it from happening post the logs so others can tell you why it happened.
I first set up my Plex server after Christmas (2019) after my son gifted me with a cool smart TV. Prior to that I had used my son’s server to watch stuff and so really liked the form and functionality of Plex instead of just streaming stuff from one PC to another or trying to use VLC to stream videos to the Chromecast on my TV.
I thought Plex would be the perfect way to organize and stream my media that I have accumulated on 4 separate hard drives on my PC.
I had no idea(my bad!) that Plex even had deletion settings pertaining to my personal files as I am learning little by little about it.
I’ve already spent hours and hours (as I’m sure all you have) setting up and organizing my stuff to be “Plex friendly” and have had to perform the Plex Dance a couple of times which is a true pain enough (because I had many different categories/libraries ) but it was free so who am I to complain about this awesome free software right?
I discovered my deleted files by chance right before I retired for the night which resulted me staying up hours longer to try to see what in the world happened… I am a beginning user ( 53 year old Grandma ha).
I immediately poured through the forums trying to see what possibly may have happened and the first thing I did was to go under “Library” in settings to make sure I didn’t have any deletion boxes ticked. Nope all was well there.
I then went in each TV show under advanced to make sure that the remaining shows were not set to delete and were all kept as well. Nope. All was as it should be.
Of course now there is no way to truly know if the deleted shows were set to delete in the advanced tab but I honestly had no idea that Plex could be so intrusive as to actually delete stuff and I have never changed any of those settings since I set up my server … so everything should have been set to it’s defaults which would mean that all my shows should have been set to never delete right? Why would that change if I didn’t even know it existed and had never even looked until now?
I read that some people had problems after optimizing shows… Nope I have never done that.
I went through multiple forums to make sure that any obscure deletion settings were setup correctly on my server to avoid deletion. Everything I saw was set to default which means- NOT set to delete.
I understand that evidently I must be the ONLY Plex user to experience a deletion problem after updating this time but guys, I SWEAR to you that the only variable that changed was that I updated. I am completely stumped… but because I am a newbie I suppose that doesn’t mean much.
To make matters worse. I was so tired and upset last night that I completely deleted my Plex server and uninstalled it from my system. As soon as I did it I had a “DUH” moment because now I’ll never know what happened because I got rid of any way of looking into logs to figure it out.
I now feel doubly stupid. It’s just that I was almost to tears with losing almost 500 GB of media. That’s probably nothing to you guys here but it was to ME.
The media files that were deleted were all contained on one hard drive. The other 3 were not effected. I suppose that is some kind of clue in and of itself but I don’t know how to interpret it so it doesn’t help me. Maybe someone here could interpret what that might mean? I can’t believe I was so dumb and reactionary that I deleted my server. I’m truly regretting that in the light of day. Oh well.
I honestly didn’t know Plex could delete my files or I would have figured out a way to protect them from the start - like setting it up as a read only type deal --as I have now seen in the forums, is possible.
However it should never have been necessary in the first place. At the very least, before Plex deletes ANYTHING, and to avoid this happening to anyone else, regardless as to whether it is user error, there should be a deletion confirmation dialogue box or some kind of notification. For people who like to live dangerously there could be a box to tick so that files could be deleted without the confirmation…but why not the safeguarding option for those of us who aren’t advanced users or who like a little insurance? I mean, Plex just wiped out my hard drive without even a peep! No notice, no nothing.
This software doesn’t come with a caveat that you have to be a computer genius. It’s sold as an easy way for any layman with perhaps intermediate computer ability to set up and view media etc. That would be ME.
I guess my rant will come to nothing and I will probably be trolled for being a stupid old lady or just plain stupid… because obviously it had to be my fault. Whatever. Maybe it was. I’ll never know now. All I know is that I am upset and stumped.
