Plex Media Server - Directly Streaming from HD

Server Version#:1.14.1.5488-cc260c476
Player Version#:2.24.0.924-63fcaa8e
Mac Yosemite

Hey there,

I’ve been a plex user for many years, but more recently as it’s features have increased and I’m using it on more platforms (ie. Apple TV, Samsung TV, Sony PS4, Plex App Mac), I’m a bit confused on exactly how the plex server works these days, along with all the changes & added features that have been added over the years.

Can someone please clear a few things up for me?

I mainly use Plex Mac Player and run the Server on my Mac Mini, which is connected to my TV.

I have my media on an external HD plugged into my Mac Mini.

I have my Mac Mini connected by ethernet to my router, and wifi is disabled on my Mac Mini.

How can I determine, that Plex App Mac is reading directly from my Hard Drive, and not streaming through Ethernet?

I’m trying to find a definitive way to be certain as there is such lag/delay/buffering that always seems to be happening when I’m using the Plex Media Player on my Mac Mini.

I understand that other devices would need to stream (ie. Apple TV / Samsung / iOS) etc, but I thought that Mac Mini running the Server and Mac App on the same machine would not need to stream back out to the internet, and then back again.

Am I right assuming this?

Is there a way to conclude that the Mac Mini is Directly Streaming from the HD?

I’m sorry, although I’ve been using Plex for many years, I’m still a bit newbie-ish and not really understood all the changes the app has gone through. It’s gotten worse over the years.

What I’d like to do, is have Mac Server and Player read directly from my Hard Drives, at full quality without any degrading or auto resampling etc, and have my other devices stream as normal.

Currently, Mac Media Player is buffering a lot, delaying in playback a lot, and some other issues. But if I can clear the direct-streaming from my hard-drive to Mac Media Player that would be the first troubleshooting step.

I appreciate your assistance, and I’ve been looking through the support articles, its just most of it is going over my head.

Thanks kindly

Geo.
