USB TV Tuner not detected by PMS on Ubuntu

Server Version#: 1.18.1.2019 (
Player Version#: N/APlex Media Server Logs_2019-11-13_18-28-13.zip (5.9 MB)

Plex PMS running on Ubuntu 19.04 with Wintv Dual-HD usb tv tuner. At some point in the last 3 months Plex has stopped talking to the WinTV stick.
The WinTV dual is accessible and works via Kaffiene. If I go to “Set-up Plex DVR” the wheel of doom just spins and spins.

PMS was installed through the PPA, I have uninstalled and reinstalled as a Snap to see if a fresh install would sort it - Nope, no change.
Have upgraded to Ubuntu 19.10 on the off chance that would help…it didn’t.

Help?
Please?

WinTV may have been unplugged when I took the last log.

I’m not alone in this.
2 people reporting same issue on this thread:

another person on this thread:

Mine quit also. I have a bunch of SSDs for playing around with different distros and tried ubuntu 16 (I think. -first unity) it didn’t work either. that was the version I first used win tv usb stik.

I’m seeing the same issue. Hauppauge WinTV-dualHD TV tuner (USB) coming up as “Device not found” in plex settings. Have to delete and then re-add. I’m running Plex on raspberry pi.

Any luck in finding a fix?

Documentation relating to WinTV and Linux is here

Also look at suggestions / advice given here Wintv dual HD tuner on Ubuntu

But this thread here suggests it is not supported

Could you follow this up with Hauppauge

Thanks for looking. The WinTV link says my tuner is supported
“WinTV-dualHD (all models, both tuners)”

I made sure before I bought it. The issue is a little strange. The tuner works nicely for the most part, but sometimes I see in the Plex settings “tuner not found”. I delete the current tuner and click “Add device” to add it back.

The tuner definitely works, on almost any operating system you would use it with going back years. I’m the one who wrote the linux driver…

You might be encountering a usb power issue though, either use a stronger and more proper actual power supply or connect the tuner through a powered usb hub.

There was a statement sometime back from Hauppauge about the Raspberry Pi and support for the WinTV tuner - see this post in the 2nd linked topic I gave

Need to establish from Hauppauge if this is still the case

A 2.5 year old thread is not good info to go on.

Current rpi kernel is 4.19. That kernel has all of my work related to this class of devices included.

I did. I uninstalled Plex from the store and installed via the ppa repository. All I can think it is, is that the store installed Plex as a snap, which doe not include a dvb plug.

If you’re trying to debug this validate the system even sees the tuner first.

ls /dev/dvb/*
ls -la /sys/class/dvb/
dmesg | egrep 'dvb|em28|lgdt|si21'

Maybe try a w_scan on the command line.

last snap related issue was here What other support is there when the Forum doesn't deliver?

Thanks for the update and your help

I’m on the 4.19 kernal:
Linux raspberrypi 4.19.97-v7+

The system always sees the tuner. I don’t think the problem is with the linux drivers for DVB. I think the problem is Plex specific. The Plex tuner settings will say “Tuner not found”, but it’s there and working fine. I’ll grab a screen capture the next time I see it.

See if the tuner is resetting and getting a new device path. I believe plex might save the device path and not just the general dvb device. If it resets it’s path will increment and plex might lose it. You can find the full path in /sys/class/dvb/ by inspecting the symlinks.
