Plex media server on android tv box?

Bingo. No muss no fuss. Everyone has an old PC layint around these days and if not, like you said, you can get one for less than the cost of one of those Android boxes and it will actually work.

The lower power consumption and smaller footprinf of an Android box is considered valuable to different users depending on circumstance. For example in countries where electricity prices are high or those who live in smaller spaces such as an apartment.

I am more than a little late to this discussion, but thought I would share regardless. I too looked for a solution to this issue, as I had grown accustomed to Plex and all the benefits it brings. After a long while trying different solutions such as android apks and alternatives like Emby. I found the best method was to load Librelec (best to use Coreelec as of 2020) onto an SD Card and then load docker through which Plex can be installed as a container. Using a 4TB external HDD connected this system runs 24/7 and has been more than sufficient for the last 1 and a half years. I am able to stream 1080P/4k content to my phone and desktop quite easily and through the use of an addon called kodiPlexConnect the server is used as a player itself. Kodi syncs up with the Plex server and because the files are stored locally 4K HDR playback is not a problem even if someone else is watching something else on another client. If you require scale, transcoding or massive amounts of storage this setup will obviously not do but as a home media server, serving a maximum of 3 clients at a time its more than adequate and can even do one 4k stream to a client other than the box itself. The system used was a Mecool M8S with 3GB Ram and a S912 Processor.
