That is, without using something like a NAS box.

I do something similar, I think, though my ripping station (i7 win 11) is my server. I have a software that mirrors folders automatically, and it and photos and music is all on the external drives ranging from 8 to 16 Terabytes.
It generally works pretty well. Until I upgraded the ripper/server to I7 and went to wifi 6, movies would stutter due to either the computer lagging or constraint of the wifi (I know hardwired would be better, but I’m disabled and don’t want to crawl around in the crawl space, and my wife would be enraged by wires being visible.)
Your approach seems reasonable.
