I have thousands of folders with video files in each folder. It is RIPs of TV shows from my DVDs/Blurays that I have spent years ripping.
The names are in the following type of format:
comedy
\Brooklyn Nine Nine
\Season 1
Brooklyn Nine Nine S1-01 Name of episode.mpg
Brooklyn Nine Nine S1-02 Name of episode.mpg
etc.
Other folder are different, but this type of naming seems to cause the most issues.
The issue I am having is that in some folders, sometimes the - is listed for some videos and sometimes it is not listed for others. The files are all named the same, but in the example above it might list
02 xxx
04 xxx
08 xxx
-01 xxx
-03 xxx
-05 xxx
-06 xxx
etc.
As I said the files are named exactly the same in all folders, but a single folder is parsed weirdly!
I have set this up as “Other Videos” because there are a myriad of naming conventions and I have no desire to spend thousands of hours renaming files to please software.
I just want access to my content, and do not want Plex to try an figure out what content I have. I just want it to let me watch it.
Here is the configuration for my TV Shows folder. Again I am trying to just have it show all the files.!
I have no need for Plex to try and find the metadata, etc. How do I turn that off?
Honestly, I have never seen a product which I have paid for that does not have some sort of technical support available from the manufacturer. I am a software engineer and have been writing software for 35 years. If I were to have released a product which has no technical support from the manufacturer, I would have gone out of business.
I simply cannot understand why Plex does not have some sort of support system to allow issues like this to be resolved.
I am regretting purchasing the lifetime Plex Pass because the product has no support available. I should have researched this first.
The root cause for this behavior could be as simple as some of your files having embedded metadata and Plex pulling an embedded title field for some of them.
Even if you’re using your own file names etc., Plex will want you to use their basic naming schema to recognize those files as tv shows / seasons / episodes.
If you need/want Plex to show things 100% according to your folder structures, don’t use a TV Show library but go with an actual Other Video type library. If you don’t use the actual tv structure of Plex but only the folder view, there’s little to no use of pushing things into a TV Show type library.
Over the years I’ve seen a number of users who tried using Plex but to stick with their very personal file naming and folder structures. Have you considered using a basic file renamer like Filebot to shape those structures so you an actually use the regular library types/agents without pulling your leg out in the process?
Not saying you cannot do it your way (or shouldn’t try it)… just saying you chose the most cumbersome approach as your use case.
