Hey guys, total noob here, very impressed with Plex (trial version) and trying to plan a Music-specific server, based around a touchscreen; ideally a Tablet.
First question is - can Plex Media Server run on ANY Tablet-based systems other than Windows or iOS? Ideally I’m looking at Amazon Fire HD or budget Android Tablet with a large SD card storage as the server device - but I’m getting the impression that PMS cannot do this on Android etc…?
I’d like to avoid an always-on PC solution (and have an ‘always-on’ Tablet if that makes any sense at all - if it doesn’t, please set me straight!).
If somebody told me that Windows Tablets or Intel NUCs (with a Touchscreen attached) maybe what I should be looking at for the always-on server requirement then that would answer my question too and help point me in the right direction.
Long story short… no, you cannot do that.
If you have a NAS that’s hosting your media or a NVIDIA Shield, you could use those as your ‘always-on’ devices and run the PMS on them.
Thanks Tom, really appreciate that. NVIDIA shield has been recommended to me also elsewhere, so that’s a route I’ll research more.
So can a NAS serve to an Android Tablet (bluetooth, in the house) and Android Mobile (via internet, outside the house) OK without requiring a PC to be always on?
Plex supports a load of common NAS platforms (e.g. ASUSTOR, Drobo, FreeNAS, Netgear, QNAP, Seagate, Synology, TerraMaster, unRAID, Western Digital – see https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/).
The NAS can stream within your home network and if you enable it also make your media available outside your home.
NAS have their restrictions as they’re not usually running on a super powerful CPU. That should however not impact your music server (more of an issue if you start streaming videos that are not supported by your endpoint).
