Plex media server will not install on debian 10.3

Debian updated to 10.3 now plex will not install. I used gdebi not sure of any other way to try this.

I need more information please.

Show me the output of the console and of /tmp/plexinstaller.log ?

there was no log. I reformated and installed debian 10.2 and same thing happened. they seemed to change security .
i opened terminal and did su to get root then did
cd /Download to get to were plex was downloaded
gdebi plex* then finally worked

It seems many linux distors are changing how things install lately. thanks its working now.

I will need figure out what’s happening. I tested Debian 10.0 & 10.1.
I didn’t think the need to test everything out there.
I will update my list and find out what’s happening.

It seems to be wayland that causing some of the weirdness. I logged out and back in and changed desktop to gnome-xserver and things are working better. I also change owner on /opt and /mnt to the user since i only use 1 user. that made things work . im not sure why plex all of a sudden needed root to install.

That might explain why I don’t see it.

I have

WaylandEnable=false

Wayland has too many graphics artifacts to be viable to me. The screen always ends up with multiple cursor arrows and other junk.

Its best if you test things on intel chipsets with intel video chips for linux, that seems to be the most stable way to run linux. I was getting some strange tearing in the video but found out my digital video connector dvi was partly unpluged. Use gen 4 or higher intel cpus if you use the i5 or i7. I would avoid the i3. That give you the most reliable hardware for testing then. Asus msi intel or supermicro motherboards.

With respect to the QSV ASIC generation, I can’t agree more. 4th gen or higher.

My tasking right now is on the packaging for all the Linux environments.
NAS boxes are so unique that they each get their own customized installation.
Most run a stripped down Busybox environment.
It’s strict per the Vendor API with no external user input at time of install whereas

Linux desktop & server have a full up systemd or init.

Is Debian 10.3 full release or still beta/RC status?
I must apologize as I’ve not had time to deep-dive.

I’m fixing some issues with the new packaging that have come up since its extended beta and initial PlexPass launch.

All things considered, having only a hand full of issues out of the 100K+ installations so far, I’m really pleased this is landing as softly as it is.

10.3 is out. I have tested 11 but they have typos in 11 that need fixed but it seems to work. I got ahold of deepin 20 and its install is differnt i think it asked like 1 question then installed on first boot it then ask for user time passwords etc. this much better for system builders. Im suprised debian has not done that.
Im basicly trying to make a nas box but I want the gui usable so i have been trying over and over an over again installing differnt distos. I finallly think I have figured out sort of how to get debian to do it. But i build the whole thing for 1 user server box not to share across the net. Im trying to keep the install as simple as i can get it.

It would be nice if plex added a way to backup the install settings and data to one of the nas drives so when we have to reinatall linux we dont have to wait hours for it to load in the video info again. On kodi i just have it write out date into each show folder and then set kodi to only read that data on reinstall.

plex sent up a update last night that I installed and so far it seems to be working ok, I did not have the problem installing the update. All of this will change so fast in the next year or 2. with the price drops of ssds and really large platter drives comming soon. Im expecting a New os soon that incorporates ai and needs like a local nas of ssds to run it. Someone also needs to address the problem of all the media compalys trying to run solo. most only produce a few shows and people need a easy way to get access to them all without paying hundreds of subscriptions that are way to high for the poor quality of the content being released. Plex is atempting to be this but just putting buttons to each place and charging full price is not the answer. People can only watch so much media at a time and having to pay pull price to 10 companys when they can barely watch the media on 3 is not wise. I keep hoping someone will step up and fix this.
Thanks for working on making plex better.

For the update you just got, Are there spaces in any of the names?

I did find a few cases where I could make it more accepting of non-POSIX environments.

Regarding backing up the config, I have asked but it becomes a race condition.
The server is performing the backup but the server must also be down (out of the database) to perform the backups.

In lieu of that, I have a simple procedure for making backups of the App Support Dir.

mine is still reloading data but the names currently loaded look fine,
even the korean and chinese titles are good.

I set a shortcut on the browser to myip:39400 to start plex but it likes to chance the ip to plex.tv/
I have seen people comenting on this that they cannot run plex offline or if the internet is not working. I wonder if a button to toggle offline mode is useful additon?

Plex is structured to run “always online”. There has been much, protracted, debate over it. The decision of the founders and management is “Always Online”.

There is a means to run offline but in doing so, all PlexPass features are disabled.

I haven’t tried it in some time but hope it’s still in the Plex/Web UI. It was there last I looked.

debian must have changed something in the way it sleeps, my roku tv is not waking it up from plex. Just never ending little problems trying to make your own media server. Now I need to learn what aps are the energy saving and disable those on the network card on the i7 server box. ok I got the tv to connect and the words for the shows look ok on it also.

Do you mind if we table the Debian 10.3 discussion until you get it worked out?

I’m trying to install it now and it will take some 2 hours to download the needed packages. It is terribly slow.

I have it working, thanks.
