Plex Media Server will not start after update to 1.15.2.793

Freenas 9 plugin.
Updated to latest PMS using the mstinaff script from about a year ago.
Can no longer see my server.
Plugin control is stuck in the “off” position.
New mstinaff script complaining about plexpass version not existing.
Need assistance.

If you’re using FreeBSD 9, installed via plugin but then moved to a custom script, I’m afraid non one can do much.

I suggest you update the system first, then either stick to the plugin, or update via pkgng/ports.

I’m actually using FreeNAS 11, but had no success getting PMS working in an iocage plugin, so kept the old Warden jail. Until it broke.
What’s your recommendation for detailed instructions on how to install something that both works and can easily be updated to the latest (PlexPass) version?

Ah I see, ok the most recent FreeBSD builds are FreeBSD 11.X based (latest should be 11.2, some before that might still be 11.1), that said you should use a jail that’s at least 11.2 anyway since anything else would be EOL.

The simple and easy way is to make sure FreeNAS is in the latest build and use a iocage-plugin (which is basically a iocage jail with some pre-defined props and plexmediaserver installed)
They have 2 flavour public/plexpass which TBH is a bit weird, I don’t see why its not just one and simply allows the user to select, but anyway back to point.

The other way would be to create a iocage jail, and then install plex on it via pkgng. Keep in mind that by default the repo config is pointed to “quarterly”, this can be changed in /etc/pkg/FreeBSD.conf, to get the most recent updates just update the url to point to latest

I personally prefer having my own jail and keeping it up to date via pkgng, you could even automate pkg upgrade via cron if you wanted to.

I dont’t actually have a FreeNAS box, as I use pure FreeBSD, but I take it you’d knwo how to create a jail via WEBUI and then just enter a shell to the jail and:

vi /etc/pkg/FreeBSD.conf (make sure it points to latest)
pkg update
pkg install plexmediaserver OR pkg install plexmediaserver-plexpass

I installed in the Warden plugin jail as per your instructions, but get the warning on the settings page:

Version 1.3.3.3148 An update is available. Please install manually.

Did I do something wrong? How do I update?

I never said anything about a “Warden plugin” but iocage, when you said freenas 11 do you mean 11.0 ?

FreeNAS 11.2-U2.1
The Warden jail has pkg 1.9.4_1

I chose to start in the Warden jail because it’s the one that had been working the longest.

Are you saying I should start again in an iocage jail?

Will this install a different version of Plex?

But that’s the legacy way right? So at some point I suppose you will always need to migrate all jails to iocage.

That said, assuming its still a jail with VNET/VIMAGE enabled, and running at least 11.1 (preferably 11.2 freebsd release) then it should still work.

You could still use pkgng to update plex there.

If you opt to migrate I suggest asking the freenas forums for help (or lookup their docs).

But in regards to plex, as long as you’re media is still available to the new jail, and you copy over the “plexdata” dir, it would be a new install but still using the same prefrs, metadata etc.

I switched from FreeNAS 9.10 to 11.2 in December. You will have to create a new jail if you want to update to a more recent version of Plex; there may be other ways but i used iocage. This wasn’t too painful and there are several posts with instructions on other forums; just make sure you don’t blow away your old jail until everything’s functional.

For what it’s worth i had issues accessing Plex on FreeNAS 11.2-U2 and had to step back to 11.2… Believe it had something to do with a VNET(?) bug in the update. But, I didn’t spend a lot of (any) time on this as reverting fixed the issue.

Thanks for the advice.
I created a new iocage jail and installed PMS manually as per instructions.

Everything is now up to date and working, so I have deleted the failed Warden jail and all my other attempts at iocage Plex plugins.

Happy days.
