<If providing server logs please do Plex Media Server Logs_2020-09-05_19-18-22.zip (6.7 MB) NOT turn on verbose logging>
Hi
When I add group of movies, the Plex metadata engine stops working. I have re-install it several time but it did not solve the problem. The only way to make it working again is by re-start the server which not convenient, can anyone help pls?
Thanks for providing the logs.
There are some factors here making your experience far from ideal:
- You have a very large number of movie files all in one single folder (it is recommended to have each movie in an individual folder for optimal performance).
- You have the server set to scan each time it detects changes in this folder.
- You are running the server on a very low powered NAS device.
Because every movie is in the same main folder when we detect changes to that folder, and a scan is triggered, the server has to read every single one of those files again. Each time changes are detected we queue up a new scan which causes the system to get bogged down with continuous scans.
There are two options I can give to improve the experience:
-
Disable “Scan my library automatically” and either scan manually only after adding or removing files or set the option “Scan my library periodically” to a schedule that suits you.
-
The nuclear option is to move all your movie files into individual folders: e.g.
Movies\The Movie (2020)\The Movie (2020).mkv. You can then have “Scan my library automatically” and “Run a partial scan when changes are detected” both enabled which will only ever scan folders which change, these scans will be much faster and use a lot less of the systems resources.
I hope this helps explain what’s going on. We’ll try to continue optimizing the scanning process more but setting up your server in an optimal way (as described above) will always be the best option.
