Plex music on Safari on iOS sounds better than Plexamp

First let me say that Plex is great! I’ve just rediscovered my old music collection and ditched Spotify.

I accidentally found something very strange. On iPad Pro 11” 2021 model with iPadOS 14.8 when I play a Flac 16 bit music file on bluetooth to my AirPods Max the quality is different from the Plex Web Player and Plexamp. The web player is better. The music from the web player has more details. It’s like the music from the Plexamp is more flat.

I tested playing a song from another site (http://qobuz.com/) from Safari and again it is better than the Plexamp.

Am I missing something?

Thanks!

Please keep the great work!

Are you 100% sure that you are not fooled by the volume difference?
Intuitively, most ppl consider louder=better.

I am trying to determine this. The volume in Safari is by default louder. I don’t know how to make it the same as the Plexamp. When I switch between Safari and Plexamp I try to increase the volume manually when playing from Plexamp, however even like this I can hear more crystal the web version. It’s like I can hear fine details in the web version that are “muffled” in the Plexamp. There is of course a small chance that I am fooled by the volume difference. I’ll keep experimenting, but for now it seems that’s not the case.

Has anyone else experienced this or maybe can try it? I guess the source needs to be Flac 16 bit and ideally with AirPods.

I assume you checked that the Music Quality was set to Maximum in Plexamp?

The iPhone should be mixing to AAC when sending to AirPods Max. I think you’d know if it was falling down to SBC.

Settings->Playback->Audio Output->Sample Rate Matching->Disabled (not sure what that is)

Settings->Music Quality->Wi-Fi->Maximum
Settings->Music Quality->Cellular->192 Kbps (This should not be applicable as my iPad does not have a cellular modem.)

Settings->Advanced->Preamp->+4 DB
Settings->Advanced->Conversion Bitrate->256 Kbps (that’s the highest setting. I am not sure what is it for.)

iPad should be streaming to the AirPods Max in AAC. There’s no way to check though.

I don’t have AirPods Max (or Golden Ears) but I can’t seem to replicate this using other headphones.

Following though. Curious if there’s something different about the audio pipelines.
