I use Plexamp on ios 14.4 and stream my media via Apple Airplay 2 to my Audio devices.
Airplay 2 is only captible of 16Bit Audio.
Plexamp plays the 24Bit Audio content over Airplay, and PMS do not show any transcoding.
So what happens here ? Does my iOS Device (iPad) the transcoding ?
Under these conditions, is 16-bit audio in the media library the best?
In this case, I’m pretty certain that Plexamp is converting the 24 to 16 bits.
The file size difference between 16 and 24 bits is usually not much.
You won’t be using Airplay forever.
And Airplay might get updated in the future as well, to handle 24 bit.
Okay, so i can keep my 24-Bit Files in my library…
Are there any Quality Issues… ?
Does Plexamp handle the Conversion from 24-Bits to 16-Bit as good as SoX do it ?
Yes I know, but then iOS or Plexamp handles the downconversion from 24-Bit to 16-Bit ?
And its better to have 16-Bit files in my library, to avoid this downconversion ?
I don’t know. You will have to study the Plexamp log files toi find out.
AFAIK, Plexamp is querying the abilities of the sound interface. If the interface is reporting 24 bits support, then Plexamp will deliver 24 bits to it.
Whether some device driver then sneakily applies its own conversion afterwards, I don’t know.
I don’t think so. The differences are very minute, and Plexamp is doing it properly on the fly, so the quality of the conversion won’t differ from what you might get in 16 bit files.
Look at the beginning, right after starting Plexamp. There should be a mention of the abilities of the sound interface. If it reports 16 bit, then Plexamp will dop the conversion.
If it reports 24 bits instead, then the driver software or the Airplay system software do the conversion. And I don’t know, how carefully they do it.
