In Love with Plexamp, but unusable with apple airplay

I am loving Plexamp for iOS, but I just can use it with airplay, its just so all a mess and out of sync with HomePod speakers. I know its probably a apple thing. The app Prism works amazing with Airplay, and I guess it because it uses the apple player it built into iOS, but ass for plexamp no such luck. I am really dishereated as well because I so love the app.
But thank you for everybody involved in the producing of it…

Many kind regards

That is odd, because I literally use Plexamp for iOS every night to my HomePod speakers and don’t have an issue

I indeed find it strange however I have found that if I use the Plex iOs app when I use the send button, I have no problem.. But the Plexamp does not have this button..

I have been trying this for a good few hours now without any issues… go back to Plexamp and I have sync problems..

The in-app menu is just a shortcut for the system airplay control; under the hood it’s the same.

I am sorry, then I don’t understand it, i have 8 HomePods around the house, and every single stereo pair has the same problem at all times…
when I use the Prism app, I have no problems at all, I can actually play all 8 HomePods without any sync problems.

We don’t have any issues with our home network, or indeed our internet, so it doesn’t make any sense to me!

Bring up the system control panel, tap the airplay icon top right of the media controls, select airplay target, profit.

You have far too many HomePods :grimacing:

Can anyone else comment as to whether it works for them or not?

I have tried using the navigation menu, also just swiping down from the top, neither seems to work! 2 HomePods set up as stereo pair, I still get the problem… 4 it’s even worse… 6 is just a no go… so can’t even get to 8… (I actually have even more but I’m not including my two daughters ones!
So we have 4 in the lounge (very big lounge) 2 in the kitchen (big kitchen) and 2 in the bedroom… We could never have to many! :joy::joy::joy:
We wanted to keep to the same system! We all have macs, iPhones, and iPads… Apple TV… so it seemed the logic choice to keep it all the same!

I have just tried it again, still the same problem… and I do t mean to mention it again, but if I use prism app then I can actually have 12 HomePods (including both daughters) going all at the same time all perfectly in sync! All I can think of is that it must be using another audio engine…

the system air play menu (the top right icon of the first picture above) should be able to do everything that prism does.

Also, you do realize, that you should also be able to set the airplay in prism, then simply switch to plexamp for actual playback…

Thank k you so much for your advise, I have tried both of these, but as soon as it’s plays from Plexamp, it all goes out of sync

weird.

does it work with just 1 airplay target ?

It is not as bad with just 1 airplay target, but it’s still not properly in sync

Hello again, sorry to be such a pain.
I have had a network engineer around today, been here for about 3 and a half hours…
nothing wrong with the network, he has tried it on his phone also… exactly the same problem, 2 HomePods set as a stereo works, sometimes… Andy more than 2, no chance… and I’m soooo so surprised that no else has has this issues! I have tried all the house hold that have iPhone and all have the same issue! I don’t know what else to do or try!

jumping in here because it’s infuriating to listen to plexamp on HomePod via AirPlay from iOS. Skipping, buffering, sync issues on single units and stereo pairs, and depending on the device, it just out right gives up after a period of time and turns off.

my content is hour to an hour and a half long DJ mixes so maybe length? but it doesn’t matter if the device is an iPad Pro, iPhone 11, iPhone SE2, iPhone X… they all skip/stutter etc.

This doesn’t happen with Music/Spotify/SoundCloud/YouTube Music/ etc. So it has to be something in Plexamp w/ AirPlay.

can i provide logs?

The lack of AirPlay 2 support has been dismissed as not necessary because the system AirPlay picker works for me :man_shrugging:. Given the HomePod was introduced as primarily an AirPlay 2 device, I wonder if this thread is highlighting a case where legacy AirPlay has been untested.

Arguing that adding the AirPlay controls in-app is merely a shortcut to the system AirPlay controls appears inaccurate according to the AirPlay 2 Introduction from WWDC 2017.

Is there a technical reason Plex is unable to implement the specified changes required for AirPlay 2?

Just another question, is there any reason why Plexamp does not “direct play” on iOS like “Prism” does??

Any thoughts?

Huh, I thought you guys were being harsh, yeah there are disconnects and one speaker will go out sometimes and there is a 3 second delay and assumed that’s how non-Apple apps worked since other music services I tried in the past did the same 3 second delay as well. Trying Prism Music everything was instant and no disconnects, pausing nor one speaker randomly going silent, so would also like proper AirPlay 2 support.

Any updates on this?

I’m having the same issues with airplay. Similar to Prism for audio, Infuse for video (audio) works fine so it’s something related to the Plex apps.

With some more searching on this it seems that the mpv player backend (used by the enhanced player) doesn’t support Airplay2 hence a bunch of airplay related issues. Infuse maybe does their own player (proprietary) and is doing a better job of it currently.

Guessing Plex isn’t interested in fixing mpv as it isn’t their technology so we just wait until mpv developers fix this before we have any chance of benefiting.

Chime in if anyone knows this isn’t the case.
