Plex Music Scanner - what am I doing wrong?

In an effort to get the Plex Music scanner to work without any hiccups, I created a test library. Two problems re-appeared, identical to two of the problems I have with my real music library.

The new library has 10 artists, total of 13 albums. All of the Artists, Albums and Tracks have an entry at MusicBrainz. All tracks were tagged with MusicBrainz Picard, matched to the release with earliest available release date.

The Library was created with the following options…

  • Prefer local metadata: enabled
  • Genres: Embedded Tags
  • Scanner: Plex Music
  • Agent: Plex Music

It appears as though everything has been scanned and loaded properly

But when you go to albums, and filter by “UnMatched”, the album “Say Say Say” by Michael Jackson is listed there. Even though it shows up under the Artist page properly.

Let’s fix the match for the unmatched album. The best match is the single release “Say, Say, Say” by Paul McCartney, obviously a duet by him and Michael Jackson. The album is listed at MusicBrainz under both artists as a single release, and remember, it has been matched with Picard before adding to the library.

I’ve successfully matched the album, so my library should be all good, right. Guess what? Now the artist bio for Michael Jackson is completely wrong.

Okay, so now we’ve fixed the match for Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson by using fix match for the Artist, and the right info for Michael Jackson is loaded, and our library no longer has any unmatched albums. The extra step to repair the Artist match is obviously a glitch in the scanner, as it is set to use the local metadata first. Applying a match to a release should not change the artist info, in my opinion. In this case, the embedded metadata for the file has Michael Jackson as the “Album Artist” and “Paul McCarney and Michael Jackson” as the “Track Artist”

Let’s add a new album that is available on MusicBrainz, “One Hot Minute” by the “Red Hot Chilli Peppers” Again, album matched and tagged with MusicBrainz Picard.

The settings for my server are set this way:

  • Scan my library automatically: enabled
  • Run a partial scan when changes are detected: enabled
  • Scan my library periodically: disabled

With those settings, I expect that when new media is added, only the new media is scanned because of this description in the settings: “When changes to library folders are detected, only scan the folder that changed.” This setting works for all other libraries (TV, Movies, etc) - only the new or changed folder is scanned.

The music library does not respect those settings, and scans the entire library when new media is added. These lines from the logs are an example because one new album was added:
Lines 30999 to 31022 from Plex Media Server.log:
Nov 11, 2019 04:38:42.904 [1288] DEBUG - Scanner: Processing directory C:\Users\Lee\Music\Test 2\Aaron Neville (parent: yes)
Nov 11, 2019 04:38:42.905 [1288] DEBUG - Skipping over directory 'Aaron Neville', as nothing has changed; removing 0 media items from map.
Nov 11, 2019 04:38:42.906 [1288] DEBUG - Scanner: Processing directory C:\Users\Lee\Music\Test 2\Aaron Neville\Warm Your Heart (parent: yes)
Nov 11, 2019 04:38:42.915 [1288] DEBUG - Skipping over directory 'Aaron Neville\Warm Your Heart', as nothing has changed; removing 13 media items from map.

What settings on the server do I change to stop this insane scanning?

All of the existing albums are matched, all of the artists are matched, all of the files are properly tagged, and in the naming format for files and folders suggested in the support documents for upgrading to the new Plex Music system.

If this isn’t a bug in the Plex Music scanner, than I am doing something wrong. I can’t see anything obvious, I’ve tried to follow all of the rules, but I am more than willing to correct any errors that anyone can show me.
