Hello,
first I discovered Plex and installed it on my computer and set up a small library to start discovering Plex. On my local machine, I can see the subtitles (always srt, always named as the video file, always in the same folder as the video) and select the external sub.
I got convinced and bought a NAS and of course installed Plex on it.
I checked the configuration of the PMS on my local machine and on my NAS and it’s all the same.
But on my NAS, Plex doesn’t see that there are external subs.
I don’t understand what I’m missing, I’ve been through all the forums and tested all the solutions but nothing works.
On the agent side, local media is activated and at the top of the list.
So for the same file, the behaviour is not the same and the only difference is the hardware.
And this is only for TV shows, I have no troubles with the movies having external subs.
Can someone please help?

You need to name the subtitles correctly. Are you using this format?
Rick and Morty - S01E01.eng.srt
or
Rick and Morty - S01E01.eng.forced.srt
No, I don’t put the language code but even if I do, it doesn’t change anything.

Ok, just to be sure, I removed a season of a TV show from the library, renamed all the subs in .fre.srt and put back the season in the library.
Plex gets updated immediately but still no subs… :-S

Tried a force refresh? It’s different to a regular refresh.

Yes I did that too. The gear icon on the right side.
Also tried to analyze files one by one and then update but still nothing.
Everytime I move a sub file, I see Plex updating but still not loading them.
On the movie side, it’s the opposite, it’s selecting my default language and default sub like a charm !
If I add a sub a delete one, it’s updating.
I really don’t understand what I’m doing wrong…

Can you send a pic of your file structure just so I can be sure you are using the correct file name structure?

yes sure but as said before, I have the exact same structure on my laptop and the subtitles are handled properly.
is there something NAS-related that I could have overlooked?

All sorts can go wrong when you stray from the official naming structure.
You need to use this one.
Shameless (US) - S07E01 - Hirarth.mkv
Shameless (US) - S07E01 - Hirarth.fre.srt.
More info here: https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200220687-Naming-Series-Season-Based-TV-Shows
Also need to be in subfolders that are also labelled correctly.
Just a thought. Do you have Local Media Assets checked for TV Shows.
Kevin.
Outside of the SxxExx naming, I don’t see any reason your NAS would see things differently than the PC does. I run the big bother model of NAS to yours. I use FileBot on a PC to ensure the naming is consistent across all of my TV series. And it’s never missed adding in subs on my 7004T. Not once…
If the series is correctly matched, the subs just follow.

Did the renaming as you said… Then I did a force refresh but still no subs.
Maybe try example.fra.srt or just .fr.srt. I’ve had problems in the past with 3 letter language codes and now I stick to .en.srt.
I’d probably try the Plex dance after renaming if that doesn’t work

Thanks for saying that because I feel like I’m crazy and/or stupid…

Tried a Plex Dance?
move all files for the show out of ‘sight’ of plex
update library (‘not force update’ not ‘Refresh all’)
empty trash
clean bundles
double check naming schema and move files back
update library
in this order
@danjames92
That’s exaclty what I started to do, I emptied the whole TV show Library (1.2To!) and on my NAS I created a new folder and I will move the shows one by one.
Also I took the advice of @WalkerNAS and put only 2 letters for the language code on the subs.
For the moment I did only one show but it’s working !!! I have my subs !!!
So thank you all for your help and patience, I still don’t understand why the behaviour is different from my laptop, looks like Plex on NAS is expecting more from the users ;-)…
I have an as302t and it’s sometimes struggled with 3 letter codes (don’t know why or really care
) but 2 letter codes just seem to work better (and less typing)
Just wish we had hardware transcoding for evansport processors…So disappointed
@WalkerNAS I’m not disappointed (yet) because I have no idea what you’re talking about
I’m brand new in the NAS world and my knowledge is quite limited for the moment…
My box is little underpowered so I have to make sure all my media is pre encoded to h264 with aac audio , which whilst not difficult is tedious (I’d rather watch the programs
)
So hardware transcoding would save me a lot of trouble , by the way Mike G’s /Cayars scripts are invaluable for this. Mike is also on the Asustor forums and has lots of good advice/ tips.
Your nas looks a tad more powerful so it may not be a problem for you, but I had a lot of avi and DVD rips which took a lot of time to convert
Hope you enjoy Plex as much as I do
