External subtitles not showing up

Hi there,

I’m using the most recent Plex Server version (Windows, 4.30.2) and I’m using the webclient on the same machine for playback.

I have an issue with adding external subs (.srt and .ass). For some episodes of a serie the subs show up and for most episodes they don’t. They’re all named correctly (even renamed them to be sure) and when I use VLC to playback locally the subs work fine.
Plex doesn’t seem to pick up the subs (“none” is shown). I already tried doing the Plex dance, but no cigar. In my agents settings, Local Media Assets are active and on top, also tried a different agent all together.
Also tried reinstalling Plex to a different location on my PC/server, but still no solution.

I’ve never encountered this before and am a longtime Plex user, anyone got a clue? It’s terribly frustrating.

Would you mind sharing the specific naming of those shows and subtitles?

Don’t do that… installing the Plex Media Server on a Windows machine anywhere else than on your C: / system drive will give Plex the creeps.

Sure, this is a screencap of a folder where the subs are working fine:

And this is a screencap of a folder where the subs aren’t working:

Or if you want it in text format, the subs that are showing up:
Bleach S03E44.mkv
Bleach S03E44.nld.ass
Bleach S03E44.srt

Example of subs not showing up:
Bleach S09e169.mkv
Bleach S09e169.nld.ass
Bleach S09e169.srt

I did revert to using C:\ as the default installation path for Plex Server.

Those image links are broken.

Oh, having a closer look I renamed the files wrong, used a capital “E” for the mkv’s and not for the subs. How dumb to overlook that, been struggling for two days and just now noticed!

Don’t forget to use sub-folders per season.
This is important when using external subtitles.

Thanks, was already using subfolders for seasons, like to keep things tidy (especially with large series). Plex builds an XML for every subfolder right?

I just renamed all the subs and currently analyzing, seems to be working fine now.
