Plex NAS Server won't play DolbyVision, falls back to HDR. Mac Server can play the same file DV

Hi all,

I have a Synology 920+ and wanted to start using a Plex server run on NAS instead of my Mac Pro '13. Downloaded the Plex package and created my libraries and all seemed good. I am playing these on Plex app on the Apple TV 4k 3rd gen.
One discrepancy I realised when playing a DV file from the Mac server’s library, it plays fine in Dolby Vision. The TV shows the DV banner. When playing the same file from the NAS Plex app, it falls back to just HDR.

Could you please help me understand/identify where the problem is? Is it just the server version difference? Or have I missed a setting on the NAS Plex server?

PMS 1.18.5 doesn’t have any concept of Dolby Vision. It predates that support.

The DS920+ is more than capable of running the native PMS 1.32.0 package.

Ah, that’d explain it! Thanks for the reply. I’ll go ahead and do a manual upgrade and report back.

OK just upgraded the Plex NAS server to 1.32 but it still plays DV files as HDR while the Mac Server is fine with DV. Any ideas about what I’m doing wrong? Could the new version be using metadata for what old version thought that DV file is? Should I be doing a clean install?

That was it. Re-analysing the file allowed it to recognise it as DoVi and I managed to get DV playback. Phew! Thanks!
