Dolby Vision in Plex client app on WebOS LG TV

Dears,

as i am running Plex Server on NAS Synology and client side app on LG TV (webOS), i am having difficulty to clearly understand if MKV contains the Dolby Vision (DV) or HDR10. File is recognized and indexed as 4K content. It should be Dolby Vision according media details but its shown with HDR flag and on tv while playing with HDR banner in upper right corner.

Is this some kind of glitch or something else?

Please advice me how should i understand this. My LG TV supports both HDR and DV technologies, however i have only seen HDR banners even for DV content

Thank you

Kind Regards,

There is hybrid content out there (aka DV Profile 8.1 which isn’t widely supported by TVs)

It’s weird stuff because people put a DV header on a HDR10 file.

Some TVs play it correctly while others don’t.

Plex looks deeper into the file beyond the header.

I have a 2021 LG C1 48". I’ve done the experimenting too and found that weird stuff out there — does not cut it. The LG wants “the good/genuine stuff”

We have got the same model of LG TV (i have got 65¨) also 2021 model C1

What do you mean by “people put a DV header on a HDR10 file”. Header is kind of information within (inside) the MKV file?

Its strange as this file should be Dolby Vision, but plex understands it as 4K HDR.

Now, as i write this reply its finally in the Plex recognized both… 4K DoV/HDR10. Not sure how this happened at last in Plex.

But LG (webOS Plex client app) stills plays it with HDR logo in upper right corner

They mess around with the first few bytes of the stream info inside the MKV file
(MKV is just a container which carries audio, video, and subtitle streams)

Look at the header again.

One states " 4K DoVi/HDR10 " – 4K, with DolbyVision and HDR 10
The other states “HDR10” and “D O V I” Profile 7

PMS is seeing it just fine as:

  1. 2160p video
  2. HDR 10 media
  3. Dolby Vision enhanced (profile 7)

Why is it important to say this way?

  • Dolby Vision - profile 5 - cannot be transcoded correctly because there is no HDR10 color data included

  • Dolby Vision - profile 7 - can be transcoded. You’ll lose the Dolby in the conversion to H.264 but at least HDR10 (10 bit color) exists to map correctly to 8-bit H264

Now to the question of: "Why doesn’t the TV show ‘Dolby Vision’ in the upper right corner?

Answer: Transcoding

There is something in how you’re playing it back - or in the streams contained (like PGS Subtitles) or bit rate being reduced which are forcing the transcode

Do you have subtitles in the file and enabled (even if not displayed) ?
Is the TV limiting quality ?

Quickie:

Tomorrow i will deep analyze and answer your questions, but now i have noticed something!

In Synology NAS on Plex serverthe movie is recognized as DoV/HDR10 but in LG (plex client 5.54.1. , platform 6.3.2) its in movie page profile recognized as “4K HDR”

I think the problem is in Plex for LG application

I concur.

I have a test file, Profile 5 (which has no HDR10 layer), is being listed as if it does.
(at least it’s ambiguous to me)

Thanks for finding this. I’d not have noticed.

I’ll take pics and write it up

And there are some more: minor findings:

E.g.:

  • my local language is set asin czech but app appear to be in czech and english (both). “Setting” button row is in english as well as “home” “more” “search” “back” options in the left side menu. Inside the setting its in czech but some descriptions are in english. Also some value options are in plain english language too. Buttons in the search are also in english (delete, space, clear). Results are in english too (in tabs: people, more ways to watch,

  • i have changed the appearance (theme?) to moon light? But it doesnt work. Nothing is happening

Another finding:

In plex server via web browser view i can chose in movie page (profile?) the available audio track and i can see the “alternative text” if exist. In LG app i am able to select the audio but i only see the general info

Czech (AC3 Stereo)
Ctech (AC3 5.1)
Czech (AC3 Stereo)
Czech (AC3 5.1)
English (TRUEHD 7.1)
English (AC3 5.1)

But no the other detail from the alternative text fiel which you can add when muxing the files.

Eg you add text commentary or another bla bla bla about the dubbing if there are more versions of different dubbings of the same language.(yes it can happen  )

Also what is strange. When changing the audio track during playback pf the movie in LG app. Entire movies stops. You select the audio track and movie restarts from the point it stopped before.
In other media players you can chose it while the video stream still plays…
Not sure if there is limitation in the TV environment but its odd.

Same behavior for the subs :frowning: it stops until you select

This tells me it is restarting the transcoder.

I will need to see your DEBUG logs ZIP file of this when you have time.

I have configured so-called “direct play”, but i will double check.
You are asking for logs from NAS Synology Plex Server??

But changing the audio or subs is problem just in LG app. If try it in LG you will see that app is designed that way. As you click on icon for subs, entire screen will display over the whole tv screen and you are not able to see the video. Also this selection will stops the playback

update: could you please explicitly specify which file log you exactly want? I have downloaded them and there are plenty. Also i am bit afraid to provide full set of logs. I remember systems where logs contained non-public and discreet information (e.g. system password etc)

I will focus just on what you need please. Or just specify the exact log name please.

What I need are the “Plex Media Server.log” files which you get in the ZIP the server provides you.

  1. DEBUG logging statements must be in the file (not VERBOSE)
    – INFO, DEBUG, and ERROR

  2. The logs must capture the activity from when you click “play” at the TV until after you click “stop” – inclusive of any server-tv data exchanges & error messages.

  3. Seeing the top 4 INFO lines of the log file (no personal info) is extremely helpful about the system itself.

Please let me know also:

  • log is very large. How can i start log (clean) from scratch without unwanted history? I would like to narrow it. Disabling / Enabling logs will work and will generate fresh log file starting from time of enabling it?

  • how can i provide you the log? It contains my Plex user name. Not sure if via this user name anyone can start cracking my account password etc. This is internet and i must be suspicious (i will find this plex User name “text” and replace by “text XYZ”… ok for you?

As for the system info. Its as for Synology NAS quite still powerful.
