Plex/Nine Database

I figured out how to share media on my network - How have I not been doing this before  I even played back some 720P and there was no buffering, and playback was pretty quick. I am excited

Oh and thanks for the fast responses guys!

I personally think the key to successfully streaming media over the network is a cable. Trying to do it wirelessly, whether 802.11B, G, N, or any other letter, will only lead to doom, gloom, and fail as the romantic comedy you've put on in an attempt to woo your date skips and stutters, as does your date, shortly thereafter. Gigabit wired for the win.

Okay, so it's definitely a possibility in the future or even near-future. At least for using something else than the plug-in to scan files (full game "integration" is a long way to go either way :) ).
I will look into it once it's out, that's for sure. Thanks again for your work on this, I'm pretty sure you just created yourself a lot more e-mails stating "WE NEED THIS NOW!".

+1. Having some sort of game hierarchy would be great! Considering I have many emulators on my Mac and love playing them on a big TV, this would be huge!!!!! I can only imagine that it would take a great deal of work though...but in the future, this would be a welcome and amazing addition!!

Great work so far on this amazing software!!! Keep up the great work!!!!!!!

I didn't see it on the screencast, but figured I'd ask anyway. With the new Media Server being as extensible as it promises to be, will we be able to scan/scrape metadata out of the multimedia files themselves? After going through the effort to tag each file so it shows up appropriately in iTunes, it would be great to use that content where possible, with the option to pull missing information (fan-art, etc) from the online sources.

This would help maintain consistent naming conventions (Batman: Begins, Batman: Returns, James Bond XXI: Casino Royale, James Bond XXII: Quantum of Solace, etc).

Thanks!

What about the plug-in I mention, the Game Launcher: http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php?/topic/14280-game-launcher/ ?
Okay, it will evolve a lot with Plex 9, but it's already working in 8.

There have been many questions about this, many from the perspective of MP4 metadata. There's no reason why a metadata agent couldn't be written that, instead of pulling metadata from an online source, pulled it from the media file.

didn't really notice this...thanks for the info!! will definitely be taking a closer look at this now. looks good, probably good be developed further into awesomeness

Hmm, i have a huge Synology NAS.
Will it be possible, to put the "library file" on the NAS, so that no special Mac in the house has to be up and running to serve the NAS-share to other MAC“s?
Or has the whole "Mediaserver" to be running on the NAS?
Anyway, i think it would be great, if no MAC has to be running in addition to the NAS, don“t you think so?

well its not even in BETA stage and you're asking for port to linux. Dont you think thats bit too early and bit too much to ask right now ?

If you want to take advantage of this right off the bat when its released, get mac server. Be that mini with attached storage, or hackintosh , in both of those cases you can get similar power consumption with alot more features.

Sounds great.
Concerning the similar power consumption: Wich kind if storage do you mean to connect to the server?
At the moment i have a 20TB NAS (DS509+ and extension), using raid and mirroring for data security.
Sorry for getting a little off topic ;-).

Does any one know if the new media Manager / Plex still support user profiles ?

Cheers

At some point, yes, but not in the first release.

Thanks alot :)
Looks good. Can Plex`s library still be updated from within Plex itself though? By using the remote? Also, does the media manager have its own smb support or does it rely on osx mounting shared drives before accessing them?

One thing though. Please ditch Mediastream in favour of Confluence. It looks tons better.

bummer... guess I won't be using it. I need those profiles to keep my kids from watching "Tokyo Gore Police" and the like. Will there be any parental controls in the first release?

Lots of support in the innards (schema, metadata), but likely none pushed up to the UI in the first release. We do want to release before 2100 AD :)

I'll put it politely, and say that our opinions differ there :)

I'm with Jam on this one B)

Hi All,

I would love to know what information, if any, will be gathered in the media analysis of .strm files. Any difference in the way Plex 0.9 will handle .strm files than Plex 0.8 does?

Vicarious

I think .strm files are currently ignored by Alexandria. If you're thinking of ways of including plug-in content (e.g. Netflix) in library sections, there will be a smarter, "official" way of doing it, rather than using .strm files :)
