you can always donate, as many have. link is top right of www.plexapp.com, yellow button with 'donate' on it. :D
he was referring to your local library database, plex doesnt report any data from its users like that (other than anonymized general system info from crash reports and sparkle) the tvshow themes are only downloaded once when you first scrape the show, and they're only hosted by plex because the tvdb doesnt support them, theres no evil plot to spy on users viewing habits or track viewership demographics, or tweet your b-movie proclivities to our alien overlords, we're not boxxee ffs.
Thanks very much, Advocate, we appreciate your kind words.
I wasn't thinking about evil plots. I can however think of a fair few legitimate reasons why stats and metrics might be useful for analysis back at Plex HQ. Unfortunately once the copyright police get wind that this data might be stored in a nice orderly manor just ripe for the grabbing they might go for it. Don't forget that currently under the DMCA and other countries implementations of the same laws just ripping a DVD and storing it in an AVI/MP4/etc... is illegal. The money grabbing media companies put this in so that they can charge per format you want the same content in.
@Advocate - I loved the statement "Mac users are some of the most honest users in computerland and I'm sure you could make a living from Plex if you could devote the time to it." Didn't a Mac user mentioned a 14TB media library recently? And isn't there a hugely popular thread on Sabnzbd?
@Elan - i can understand the uncertainty around the future of Plex - but I strongly believe in making a decision one way or the other and forging ahead and making a success of that decision; hedging bets never moves things forward quickly enough for me. You can quickly learn whether a decision the wrong decision and then you adapt. if you keep putting the decision off you never find out.
Right now you're getting ready to release something new that significantly differentiates Plex from XBMC for MacOS - that would be the perfect time to go commercial. Setting the price should be fairly easy - I'd say £30-50; this is roughly 10% of the cost of the Mac Mini lots of users are using for Plex. If you're note certain - put it on the table to the users; whose willing to put money where their mouths are and pony up for a commercial Plex/Nine - you can stick my name at the top of the list.
Go on, when Plex/Nine is ready take the plunge and let's get all commercial. If the Plex/Nine DB re-write is a juicy as you keep teasing with - then you should have no trouble raising a number of sales. If you release it free first then you'll struggle to get people to pay later.
Then once it's commercial have a chat with the guys and girls over at Slingmedia and build Slingbox support in - another paid for option; Sling media could then help market :-)
What ever you decide to do - best of luck!
I'm mainly agree with what u're saying, maybe differently in one part: the price... Don't make it too expensive, people would not buy or would hack it. Also, high price means high expectations... so better to price it at reasonnable price and everybody will enjoy to get a good software which, I can say, has being now a reference in my country
I'm also for paying or donating something to Plex dev., by myself I'm going to do it on the next release! Ahah!
Long life to Plex forum anyway
elan has already state that Plex is free now, so it will always be. That makes sense to me
The donate button is great too! I will say this though: Plex should somehow “partner” with some companies to possibly have exclusive pay-per-view content within Plex. The content would work through the server, and Plex would get profits from the users whom are purchasing the content with their software. That is how iTunes works - the software is free, but Apple makes $$$ using that free software to sell product. That’s a possibility for Plex nine
Hi there. This must be my third post or so - still very new to Plex.
What can I say… I love it !! Still finding out the best way to work with it, but it is sooooooooooooooo much better than Front Row
To all the developers:
For all I care, go commercial. Give up your days jobs (maybe partly, to start with), give even more attention to Plex, and come with a commercial 1.0 version as soon as possible. I’ll buy it in an instant (depending on the price, of course).
Or another thought, get in contact with Apple and sell it to them as a replacement for Front Row.
In any case, keep up the good work !!!
I will be monitoring the development of Plex in the future and I’m sure I’ll have some stupid questions over the next few months, but I guess that’s as to be expected…

Willem, Netherlands
Id gladly pay 50 or whatever for Plex as soon as the library can be shared across several machines without all the symlinking bullshit. As of now though, Id rather grab XBMC for free.
+1, although given the finickiness of the library system today, it is nice to have a 'test' machine on which i can test scraping new info before i do it on the machine that's connected to our main TV that the kids/wife uses...
Which is a completely fair reason to be closed source. It's also why companies don't necessarily publish every API they use, because they don't want to be bound by decisions that haven't been finalized.
So THIS is where the **completely idiotic** notion of "closing" Plex came from.
To be fair, he didn’t advocate closing it, he advocated charging for it, which is very different.
True, but as has been mentioned, that's what the donate button is for. Which I am now looking at very guiltily.
As generous as people have been with the donate button (you know who you are!) we're still working our day jobs.
It's hard to make a living busking.
Impatiently waiting for the new release…
Will click donate upon release. Lets see, if enough of us start with a $100 donation and subtract $1 for each day until release day maybe we can get this new release by summer!
I jest - Keep up the good work.
does that mean if its more than 100 days he has to pay you to download it :)
+1 Count me in.
Thats the easiest way to get them to release a completely bugging version of plex 0.9. The whole point of the release is stability from what i hear, so it would seem silly to rush them into releasing a version that isn't ready, even if we are all desperate to have the new library system. But I agree once there is a stable release i will too use that donate button to thank the guys for there hard work so far.
not quite, obviously they wont release anything thats unstable to the point of being unusable, but the even numbered series (.8) are suposed to be the stable releases, .9 is a total overhaul of the library system, major new features surrounding it and the media server and plugin frameworks, and who knows what else, its practically a guarantee that some things WILL be broken, and some things WILL be unstable, for at least a few point releases.
Lets get back to topic or I will close this thread down without looking back. <_<
