I was on a .9x version of plex before I decided to allow the upgrade. I wish (and I guess I should) have reviewed the forums before doing so. After the upgrade to 1.0.2, I could watch movies fine within my home. All moves are .wtv mpeg2 encoding /w AC3 audio format and the typical bitrate I set is 6200Kb/s. After the upgrade, I could not watch any movies remotely. ON web I would get the error message noting not able to play. On my iphone it would note that the minimum bandwidth needed to play the video was somewhere in the neighborhood of 150K (don’t recall the exact #) and the app noted that I had less than 1K available.
Home upload speed 11M/s
Remote web speed 28M/s
Remote iphone connected speed 15M/s
So speed is not the issue.
That’s when I did the research and saw all of the issues with upgrading to 1.0. Whatever the fixes were in 1.02, they don’t work for me. I decided to revert back to 0.9.16.6. I can play the movies but now the issue I have is if I leave the default on the player to play “original” speed, I get buffering. Never had this before I did the upgrade then downgrade. If I set the speed at 2Mb/s, it plays smoothly.
I know I can provide more info but any initial thoughts. Yes I would prefer to be on the latest version but with it not playing anything, that seems like a non-starter.
Please take one of the movies which doesn’t play on Plex/Web (we’ll start with the basics)…
Get the media info PMS has for it (select the film, hover on the 3 dots, get the ‘info’). Also click ‘View XML’ and grab that too. Please paste both here (using ‘Code’ paragraph formatting) so the forum doesn’t try to interpret it.
Where I’m going with this is directly at the codecs. The fundamental change between 0.9.16.6 and 1.0 is codecs are now downloaded as needed. Once you have it, you’ll never need it again.
Also, speaking to codecs, If running on Linux, check /etc/fstab and make certain the ‘noexec’ option is not present on the file system where /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library is mounted. This will stop everything but the bare basics from running.
Below is a sample movie providing what you requested. I went and re-installed 1.0.2 with the same result. Note: I used my iphone and when connected to mobility network I get the same error. If I connect to my home wifi, the media plays.
Added note: When I revert to version 0.9.17.3.2239-fe07491, I still get the error playing the media. I have to use 0.9.16.6.1993-5089475 to play media remotely.

By default subtitles are off but to satisfy the question I ran this same movie with and without subtitles and it did not work. I tried with and without subtitles in .9.17 and it played fine. A 30 second version of the movie is below.
I have also had problems with the recent release. The main issue is that movies that played perfectly through Google ChromeCast before now just start, stutter and then stop. If I play the same move through my iPad or the Samsung SmartTV Plex client then all is fine. Other than the recent software update, I have not changed any settings.
I an running Plex MS on a QNAP TS-543 Pro, the CPU is the Intel® Celeron® CPU J1900 @ 1.99GHz

Best to create your own thread instead of hijacking this one.

@ Chuckpa. I tried installing the latest update ver 1.1.0 and the same issue occurs.
Using Plex Web, go to a movie and hit “Analyze”, then try playing it back remotely. I believe there was a bug in 1.0.2 that this analysis did not work properly. With 1.1.0, this is fixed but the analysis does not automatically occur. It will eventually if you have that set as a schedules task but this will update it for 1 movie. If this works, run “Analyze” for every library and you should be ok from then on.
Update: I tried that and the same issue occurred for remote access. I tried multiple movies to ensure I do a thorough test. Also, I used my iphone and connected to my lan and of course the movie played fine. Remote…not so much.
Ok, we’re going to need to see the log from both the server and the client after you try playing remotely. It really shouldn’t matter how you access the server.
With PMS shut down, If you will snapshot (collect and set aside) all the Plex Media Server log files. This will give us fresh logs “from the beginning”.
Now, with your iPhone on cellular only (no wifi), start PMS and start a playback of what you know will fail. Please try to minimize your browsing around at other things. Try to be surgical in your recreation.
After that fails, enable wifi again and repeat the same invocation. As soon as you know it will be fine, stop playback.
Wait 60 seconds for PMS to quiesce and then shut it down, collect all the new Plex Media Server log(s) in a zip/tar and post here as MovieFan suggested.
I’m dumbfounded as to why but for some reason when I reinstalled the latest update this morning and tested remotely, all movies I tested played fine. I tested the ones I always used and validated with some others and had zero issues. I did nothing different other than to do my 10th or 11th re-install and for some reason it is working.
For now I’ll call it luck and leave the new version running. If the issue returns, I’ll follow the note above and open a new case.
