Hello all - I have recently joined Plex/Plex Pass, and I initially set up my media server to be on my iMac. However, this server isn’t always on, and I also have a network drive attached to our home router that we use for some media (namely music, where our music library is accessed for whole home usage for our Sonos system). I want to naturally be able to access the server when the Mac goes to sleep/shut down, so am I able to move the server easily to the network drive? Let me know please. Thanks.
Plex server cannot run on a mere drive. It needs a computer.
There are some NAS devices (basically a combination of [slow] computer and drive[s])
but many of them lack the processing power to use Plex fully.
Use these only if you are willing to pre-convert your media files exactly to the lowest common denominator (quality/feature-wise) of all your playback devices.
[edit:] Most of the NASs available won’t be able to handle Live TV adequately. They simply lack the processing power.
