Plex not able to use subtitle file with some episodes of series

Server Version#: 1.20.3.3483-211702a9f
Player Version#: 5.3.1
Platform Version: 4.8.0

Hi!
This problem has been bugging me for a very long time now and I had enough. I can’t find any help online so I’m opening this topic.

I watch a lot of anime and series (also movies somethimes) throug Plex and it used to be fine but it’s a mess right now. I use .srt and .ass subtitle files and Plex randomly not recognising the subtitles. Sometimes it’s the whole series, sometimes it’s only a couple of episodes. On the problematic episodes if I chose the option to upload a subtitle file or search for online and I select a file it will not appear in the list.

The above is only when I add the media as series. If I add it as other video than the subtitle files work perfectly all the time. The problem is that I want to add them as series for the metadata and everything.

Another problem I have is sometimes when I turn on subtitles for a movie the sound disappears. Subtitle on - no sound. Subtitle off - there is sound.
I always use .mkv files. I’m not an expert so I can’t really give more info. If more information is needed plese let me know and I’ll try to dig deeper.

Here is an example:
This is an anime I just wanted to start watching and have this problem.

In this case some of the episodes have subtitle but 4 of them don’t get recognised by plex.

Thank you in advance for everyone.

Can’t see any subtitle on Tv Shows in early access mode.

Is my version early access?

I can only advise you on the missing subtitle issue.
Please show the complete folder path where your tv show episodes reside in.

In the case of the anime series:
E:\Letöltések\Anime

Basically everything is in the Letöltések folder on the E drive.

Please include the full file and folder names, down to the individual episode.

E:\Letöltések\Anime\Dance In The Vampire Bund (BD_1920x1080)
[Yousei-raws] Dance In The Vampire Bund 01 [BDrip 1920x1080 x264 FLAC].ass
[Yousei-raws] Dance In The Vampire Bund 01 [BDrip 1920x1080 x264 FLAC].mkv

The rest are the same. Name of the subtitle file is exactly the same as the episode only the file format is different.

  1. you are not using a “season” subfolder. Yes, you need one – even if the tv show has only one season.
  2. it is pure luck that Plex is working with a file name like that. Expect trouble with not recognized or mismatched tv shows as your library grows.

Okay, thanks. I’ll try and rename the episodes and make a Season 1 folder.

You can indicate the language of the subtitle text: https://support.plex.tv/articles/200471133-adding-local-subtitles-to-your-media/

I have renamed the files as you said, put them in a Season 1 folder and tried the setting you’ve linked but it’s still the same. I even checked the subtitle files but as far as I can tell they use the same settings.

And the weird thing is that if I add the same anime as Other video the subtitles work perfectly with all episodes. I don’t understand…

Please post the contents of the Plex XML info of one affected epoisode.

Okay I solved it! By your help of course. In the get info panel there were multiple files. Openings, endings, stuff like that. After I deleted them plex can use the subtitle files again.

Try renaming the folder to Extras. This should make Plex ignore it.

These folders are always called Extras in my case. I’ve deleted these folders and that solved the problem.

Your screenshot shows them as Extrák, not Extras.

Damn, I didn’t even realise that :joy: I’ll try renaming the folder next time.
