Plex not loading with new update (Version 1.13.5.5291-6fa5e50a8) on macOS

Every time I try to open Plex it gives me an error saying “the server where this page is located isn’t responding”. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled the PMS multiple times and I’m still running into the same issues. I’ve even deleted the folders inside the ~/Library/ before reinstalling and still no luck. The only time I can open it is if I go through the app.plex.tv link, but even then it says that my server is unavailable. This is very frustrating and I’ve spent hours looking for a solution, can anybody help?

I have the exact same issues. All of a sudden it cannot access library files anymore. It gives errors like: ERROR - Exception caught determining whether we could skip ‘Sons of Anarchy/Season 02’ ~ Null value not allowed for this type

Actually, I left it for some time (I guess 10-15 minutes) and it was accessible again. I guess there are some background processes running after the update that take some time to complete.

I guess I’ll have to try that when I get home!

Don’t bother, there’s clearly a bug in this release. Today it crashed and keeps on crashing each time it starts. Downgrade to 1.13.4 and everything works smooth again.

How do you downgrade? The site only has the latest update

I did a google search for version 1.13.5, leaving off the final version number. Found a few sites with older versions. I also moved back to the last version and it fixed my problem. When the box popped up to upgrade to latest version I clicked skip this version.

Note that when you click skip version you may not be able to update directly from PMS anymore.

Workaround:
Delete the key ButlerTaskUpdateVersionSkipped
from your Plex Server configuration file

For those with issues using this version, please go to thread Downgrade from 5291

Anyone with issues please make sure debug logging is enabled and gather server logs and attach the zip together with details of the issue

A general point

Pre-existing database corruptions tend to show up and have a big impact when upgrading Plex Media Server if the database schema changes

Thank you. I’ll try that.

I downloaded my log files. I am unable to get the log files from the lates version of Plex due to it failing to locate the server and not giving that option. I am currently running the previous version of Plex 13.4, with a 2009 Mac Mini running OS 10.11.6. I have had no problems with Plex prior to this update.

Plex Media Server Logs_2018-08-16_14-07-07.zip (2.5 MB)

The logs which are for 1.13.4.5271 cover period from Aug 14, 2018 15:15:44 to Aug 16, 2018 14:07:00.

So when was the problem?
If the problem is only on 1.13.5.5291 then i need the logs from that
If you can’t download the logs through web interface then would need to do it the old fashioned way - which is to copy the directory out and zip the copy and attach here

For location of log files, See

Sometimes database corruptions only cause a problem acfter upgrading and it may be that. But need the logs to confirm

I notice there was an issue whilst running 1.13.4.5271
All communication with pubsub.plex.tv server was failing. These pubsub servers are within xxxx.members.linode.com and may change)

Do you have any security software that blocks some domains / ip addresses ? any geo ip blocking?

The pubsub server was on IP 45.79.197.109

There is no security software installed on this computer. It is my old computer that I erased and then setup to run the plex server only. The computer is not used for any other purposes.

I will try again to get the newer version of the app to load and get the logs. Haven’t had any luck before.

Alright, I downloaded the latest version of Plex and reinstalled it. I was having the same problem, but after about 5 minutes the server connected and I was able to get the logs. This happened last time as well, but when attempting to watch movies it would disconnect and I would be unable to get it to reconnect.

Since updating back to the latest version of Plex last night, the server continues to connect and disconnect for no apparent reason. Sometimes when I check the server it will show connected, but the player apps on my computer, Appletv, and my phone show it offline. When they do connect and you try to watch something it disconnects. Here are this morning’s logs:

Thanks for the logs
I can see 1.13.5.5291 was launched at 20:33:05 and i can see requests were locked out until about 20:35 which was the time when you managed to access the server and download the logs. So it does appear like a transient lockout. I have referred the logs to the development team.

What would be useful to have together with the logs when you get the lockout is get a list of the connections - as i mentioned to @akilger14 here

It is a type of deadlock but I do not believe it is permanent

I haven’t been able to figure out how to get the information you requested. I read the article on plex tokens, and even tried changing my password. But not sure how to get info you want.

if you follow the steps here https://support.plex.tv/articles/204059436-finding-an-authentication-token-x-plex-token/
and select a media file from your library in Plex Web and then selecting option Get Info as outlined here https://support.plex.tv/articles/201998867-investigate-media-information-and-formats/
then you should be able to see the url in the browser changing and having a parameter starting with X-Plex-Token= you need copy that token string and save it for later

and then try http://127.0.0.1:32400/connections?X-Plex-Token=xxxxxxxxxxxxx
and have the token string instead of the xxxxxxxxxxxxx
