Plex not playing 4K content

I just bought a LG 4K OLED, it’s connected to my Nvidia Shield using new premium HDMI cables. I’m streaming via a Plex server on a computer that has an six core i7 and a very fast RAID. The shield is connected via gig ethernet.

The shield is setup for 4K 59.97.

When I try to stream a 4K mkv file it only streams it 1920x1080 and says “resolution or bitrate exceeds maximum allowed”.

I have both the local and remote settings set at “original”

What’s going on, I’ve read many reports of people getting plex on the shield to work with 4K content.

Any help would be really appreciated!

Welcome to the Oled club. I got myself a 65 b7
I was having the same problem as you. I configured plex in the shield to only do direct plays and original quality. Everything works fine except with 4k. 4K used to be working before, but then Plex updated it and now plex refuse to play original quality 4k. Even though its instructed to play original quality and you manually choose it when playback a movie, it auto jumps to transcode. This is the problem mate.

I use kodi now since plex doesnt want to fix this simply issue.

Interesting. Did it work for you before?

Wondering if I should roll back a version or two of Plex and see if that works.

What’s interesting is I found that the Plex client on the LG TV plays the 4K video back just fine. But then I’m stuck with using Arc so I’m missing the better sound that the Shield can offer.

Update -

I’ve rolled back to the factory installed version of Plex and now everything seems to work.

Seems this is an issue with Plex’s latest update on the Shield?

I have exactly the same issue again (OLED club member too!). After the previous update it did the same. I uninstalled the updates but couldn’t get anything to play until I reloaded the update then all was fine again until the new update. Will have to repeat this again by the sound of it. Something not right here Plex!

Hello, I don’t have Oled but I have issues in my LG UH6150 LED TV with the HDR.
I’m Using my Shield how Client

I rolled back to the factory and is fine,
The last version can’t play 4K HDR

I’ve got the same issue here. The Update is the key…read here: http://forums.plex.tv/discussion/277598/plex-is-trying-to-transcode-4k-hevc-files-instead-of-direct-play#latest

Good news though: they’re working on a fix!

Thanks @terry0208 and @streiber
My problems aren’t in the mux, all my collection is on MKV and I have an standard to mux my content using MKVToolNIX.

I’m in the beta programs of Nvidia and Plex. Since last week, the 5.2 version of Nvidia is available. For Android, in one week Plex are made around two updates.
I use a Windows 10 PC how a server in my LAN at 1 GB certified… anyway, yesterday I found some time to play with this situation. ( I don’t use my Shield how server).

I found some things to do.
Nvidia Shield v2.

1- Plug and unplug the HDMI wires and check connections ( in the right way)
2- Clean possible dust in the vent of the bottom of the Shield
3-Reset The Shield from the kernel

After the kernel is wiped, Shield start over FROM 0, you have to sign in to google and shield and wait for the updates (in my case i leave the updates in auto)

The first run of Plex ask you for use how server or not, uncheck if this is your case, then go to settings/apps you found “Plex server” and disable/uninstall Plex Server.

Looks even you don’t use the server in yout device somethimg happend and cause a conflict.

After do all this things everything works like sharp even the HDR is working again. hope helps

Regards

It has something to do with Plex server on Shield. I was having the same issue so I decided to install plex server on my computer and set Plex on my shield to see my PC server and it worked. 4k playback, no issues. Before I did this, I factory reset the shield just in case. So until they fix this, I’ll be using my PC as the server for now. It’s the go between my shield and unraid server.

P.S. I decided not to even install the server on my plex this time (unchecked the box).

If you can’t get the Shield to work, try the Plex App for LG – you can download it to the TV from the LG Apps store. With quality set to original, it will correctly directplay most anything, including 4K HDR UHD rips (even including Dolby Atmos). I use it on my LG OLED all the time.

Note, the latest version includes a preview of the new UI… so far I’ve found that version has more issues playing 4K UHD, so stick with the “classic” UI for now.

The Official Plex app for the Shield isn’t very good.

It has to transcode EAC3 audio and TrueHD (Atmos)

The latest update seems to have removed the option to force direct play.

I installed Kodi, with Plex addon, and now it direct plays anything.
